Patrick Murphy has applauded Hillary Clinton for her commanding win in Florida.

“Hillary Clinton’s victory tonight is proof positive that Floridians want a leader in the White House who is committed to fighting for what matters most to our families — rebuilding the middle class, protecting Social Security and Medicare for our seniors, fighting for women’s health care and reforming our criminal justice system,” Murphy said in a prepared statement Tuesday.

“Secretary Clinton is one of the most qualified candidates we have ever had for president and I’m thrilled by tonight’s results.”

Clinton soundly defeated Democrat Bernie Sanders in the Sunshine State. According to unofficial election results, Clinton received 64 percent of the vote compared with Sanders’ 33 percent.

“Every vote counts, every volunteer hour counts, every contribution counts,” the former Secretary of State said in a speech Tuesday night.

Murphy is running for U.S. Senate to replace Sen. Marco Rubio, who was running for president. The Florida Republican suspended his presidential campaign on Tuesday night. He is projected to come in a distant second with 27 percent of the vote. Donald Trump is projected to win Florida’s winner-take-all primary with 45 percent of the vote.

“This is in clear contrast to tonight’s Republican primary results. Donald Trump’s Florida victory shows how far outside the mainstream today’s Republican party is,” said Murphy.

“His divisive, bigoted, and extremist rhetoric have no place in our politics or our country. I know the American people agree, and I am confident that this November we will elect a president who will break down barriers and build ladders of opportunity – and that candidate is Hillary Clinton.”
