Jax preps for TS Colin; Lenny Curry says to ‘expect the unexpected’

As torrential rains and high winds buffet points to the south and the west, Jacksonville braces for whatever impact Tropical Storm Colin will present later on Monday and Tuesday morning.

To that end, an afternoon press briefing was held by Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry on Monday.

Curry noted that the current state of emergency includes Duval County, so that it can access state resources if needed.

Around the evening rush hour, Curry added, the rain bands are expected to roll in, starting a pattern that should last, off and on, until 5 or 6 in the morning.

Flooding and possible tornadoes could occur.

“Public works is already out,” said Curry, looking at areas where flooding is most likely, clearing blockages that could obstruct drainage.

Eight extra JEA crews are on call, though they will not be out in high winds to restore power.

To alleviate rush hour traffic, Curry said non-essential city employees are encouraged to leave work at 3 p.m.

Bridges are “being monitored,” but no shutdowns are currently scheduled.

Meanwhile, Curry says, the city should be back to “business as usual tomorrow.”
