Consumers for Smart Solar spends another $4.3 million

Supporters of Florida’s solar power amendment spent big money last week, hoping to make one last push to convince voters to vote “yes” on Amendment 1.

State records show Consumers for Smart Solar spent $4.3 million between Oct. 22 and Nov. 3. That brings overall spending to more than $25.4 million.

Consumers for Smart Solar spent more than $3.6 million on advertising between Oct. 22 and Nov. 3. The group spent another $526,508 on “consulting and advertising,” and $91,520 on polling, according to reports.

Records show the committee raised no money during the fundraising period. The group has raised $26 million, much of which came from the state’s electric utility companies, overall. The committee ended the fundraising period with $554,019 cash on hand.

Amendment 1 is backed by the state’s major electric companies, and outlines the rules for solar power in Florida. It would put existing law dealing with the rights of homeowners and businesses to own or lease solar equipment into the state constitution.
