The Committee to Support Greyhounds has been formed for the “purpose of promoting greyhound welfare, racing, and adoption, as well as educating the public regarding the life of racing greyhounds,” the group announced in a Monday release.

“The members of this committee are a group of passionate supporters of the greyhound breed, spearheading a grassroots campaign to boldly go into the heart of greyhound racing in Florida, sharing real life events of happy, healthy, loving greyhounds in ALL stages of life – from young puppies to life at the track to retirement,” it said.

The committee’s announcement comes the same day that advocates for a ballot initiative to put an end to greyhound racing launched their “Protect Dogs – Yes on 13” campaign.

Amendment 13, placed on the ballot by the 2017-18 Constitution Revision Commission, would outlaw the racing of dogs and wagering on such races. Amendments need at least 60 percent approval to be added to the state constitution.

The proposal also would allow other gambling at tracks, such as card games, to continue even after dog racing ends. In Florida, live dog racing is still conducted at 12 tracks.

“The ex-racing greyhounds you may meet personally or see from a distance did not just ‘happen’; their demeanor and their willingness to adapt to different situations come first from careful breeding over generations, then from being raised with attention and love, and most of all, from being allowed to do what they love to do: Run, chase, and race,” said Committee to Support Greyhounds chairman Jennifer Newcome in a statement.

“If you take any one of those out of the equation, the greyhound you will see in the future will be a very poor imitation of the amazing, athletic, adaptable and loving animals you see now,” she added.

“Greyhound racing has been a proud Florida tradition for decades, as well as an integral part of the Florida economy, creating thousands of jobs, contributing to the tax base and supporting local charities,” Newcome said. “This grassroots committee will work to educate and inspire voters to vote FOR Greyhounds by voting NO on Amendment 13.”

The committee’s website is here.

Updated 3 p.m. — The “Protect Dogs – Yes on 13” campaign issued a statement in response to this post:

“This afternoon, greyhound breeders filed a political committee cynically called the Committee to Support Greyhounds. This is an obvious attempt to confuse voters, and proof that they don’t have a real message.

“It’s worth noting that the chair of this deceptively-named committee lives in Texas, while the Treasurer lives in North Carolina. We will not be distracted by this out-of-state group.

“While greyhound breeders try to sow confusion, we will continue informing our neighbors about greyhound confinement and racetrack deaths. We are confident that once voters have the facts, they will vote Yes on 13.”

We are very proud of our two retired racers, our boy raced at Sarasota and Mardi Gras and the wonderful people who worked with him still remember him almost five years later!
Our dogs are the wonderful companions they are because of the love and care that went into their breeding, schooling, and training. Racing greyhounds are the best kept dogs in America. Please don’t believe the lies put out by the profit-driven extremists behind the attempt to eradicate the breed.
Racing Greyhounds LOVE to run and racing gives them the opportunity to have wonderful careers and a secure network to welcome them into retirement.

We are a group of close friends from all over the country. We all now live in Florida. We are well educated on the “life of a greyhound racer”. And thus vote a definite NO on amendment 13. The tracks are very good for the dogs.

Retired racing greyhounds make greyt pets because of the way they are raised and cared for when they are puppies and during their racing career. Please vote No on amendment 13 and let these beautiful dogs continue to do what they love!

I urge all of my friends and family to vote NO on 13. Don’t believe the Grey2k lies! All of my greyhounds were well cared for when they were racing and awaiting to be adopted.

The Protect Dogs – Vote Yes On 13 committee members are Florida based, unlike to pro racing committee chair and treasurer from Texas or North Carolina. We are confident that voters will vote in November to phase out cruel and inhumane greyhound racing. Vote YES on 13

and who is funding your group, out of state lobbying groups

    • Kathryn De Jong

      June 4, 2018 at 4:40 pm

Carla, I find your comment rather interesting. Are you implying that anyone out of state who loves, cares and understands the racing greyhound should not have a valid voice in opposing your lies? I live in Ontario, Canada and have three retired racers and run a greyhound adoption group. After visiting several kennels and tracks over several years in Florida and seeing hundreds of fresh off the track and farm Florida retirees into adoption, I can say without out a doubt, these are loved and beloved athletes. What deeply disturbs me and should disturb Florida voters is the lack of education and out right lies you and your group are sharing in the media when you live in state. You should be utterly embarrassed that so many out of state and even out of country people have taken the time to learn the truth about greyhound racing when you have not.
      Vote No On 13!

The yes on 13 club is organized and funded directly by grey2k, which is based in Massachusetts. Links to sign up for their “grassroots” meetings lead DIRECTLY to grey2k’s website with its handy “DONATE” button.

Fla based? Really? Vacation homes/ living in rental units ? Does that count?
Visit a race track or a training kennel. You don’t have to call ahead to warn them you are coming. Just show up! The people and the happy dogs will be glad you

Your entire platform is promoted by an out of state lobbying group… you are aware of that aren’t you? Please go visit a , farm, track or kennel and educate yourself if you have not done it already. I respect your opinion and make no judgement, I am simply asking you to do UNBIASED research on your own, including a visit to one of the above. You will see that what you have been told by that lobbying group is far from the truth.

I looked into it myself as I am suggesting that you and others on the “Vote Yes” side do before November. I went to multiple places, including adoption agencies, and based on what I saw for myself I now stand FIRMLY on the “Vote No” side of the issue.

Uh one has extensive campaign finance law experience. Unlike your group who has been FINED for not properly reporting under Florida law, the Committee you speak of took that person on to actually FOLLOW the law. I know you people have a problem comprehending that. And the other person you speak of is actually a FL resident and pays taxes here. So maybe know for ONCE what you are talking about before you type.

Really. This whole amendment to ban racing was proposed and backed by grey2k out of massachusetts and the ushs who is also based outside of Florida. So before you preach about something know the real facts not what is given to you by the koolaid drinkers

    June 4, 2018 at 3:15 pm

Wait… two of the top positions in this new group are occupied by people who don’t live in Florida? Yet one of the comments that always gets tossed out about GREY2K is that they are out of state. Pot, meet kettle.

It is ridiculous to state that greyhounds are the wonderful breed they are because of racing. Greyhounds were around thousands of years before racing existed, and they will be around long after racing ends. In fact, my group has placed several greyhounds that were not bred for racing and were never exposed to tracks or training, and they all had the same sweet, docile nature as any racing greyhound.

The end of greyhound racing is inevitable. If you really love and want to “Support Greyhounds” you will stop threatening to kill thousands of them when that day comes.

    • Joe T

      June 4, 2018 at 3:55 pm

they have been used for hunting and chasing for centuries and its because of the selective breeding that they are such wonderful animals even if they never raced, they are brought up with the mother and sibling for a year unlike other breeds

      • Kelly Faircloth

        June 4, 2018 at 4:31 pm

Wrong. We’ve placed several AKC greyhounds. And our last two litters of oops puppies came to us before they were even 8 weeks old.

        • I did my own research

          June 4, 2018 at 7:43 pm

You mentioned they are AKC greyhounds … Not NGA registered greyhounds … that is MONSTROUS difference. Joe T is referring to NGA registered greyhounds I am sure where it is common that siblings are kept together for the first 12 months. Please take the time to visit a farm, kennel, or track unannounced and see for yourself.

      June 5, 2018 at 12:07 pm

Why A Big THANK YOU, goes out to Kelly Faircloth, you just summed up the lies with YOUR OWN words, you said, and I quote “In fact, my group has placed several greyhounds that were not bred for racing and were never exposed to tracks or training, and they all had the same sweet, docile nature as any racing greyhound.” So Thank You for pointing out the fact many of us have been trying to point out, these Racing Greyhounds that are retired, are not abused and mistreated, as you say, they are “Sweet and Docile”, which comes from having great care, Thank you again for your input, look forward to you helping more in the future!

      VOTE NO ON AMENDMENT 13!
Kelly, you’re the only one who seems to be threatening the killing of dogs here – so what does that say about YOU? That said, I do agree with you: greyhounds have been around a very long time: AS WORKING DOGS. They were used for hunting, coursing, and RACING. It is the upbringing they receive that makes them the WONDERFUL, adaptive pets they are. AKC dogs and pups that have never raced are NOT of the same temperament as retired racers BECAUSE of the care and training they get in their formative years, and if you were being totally honest, you’d admit as much.

We will be out there to tell people the truth, if they’re open to hearing it, that is. And, since your West Palm Beach meeting venue is just a hop, skip, & a jump from the Palm Beach Kennel Club, maybe we can actually get a few folks to go over and see for themselves the fairy tale you’re spinning?

As for the organizers of the Committee To Support Greyhounds, there are people from all over the country involved. Why don’t YOU admit who is behind the group you’re supporting? HSUS is based in Washington, DC, RUNS ZERO ANIMAL SHELTERS, donates just over 1/2 of ONE PERCENT to actual shelters, and has ZERO experience handling greyhounds. And, the other group (who’s name shall not be spoken) is from Massachusetts. Both of those groups are national, collect MILLIONS of dollars and do as little as possible for actual animals. THAT is where the money is coming from so PLEASE stop misinforming Florida Voters! Your chair people are simply a front for the bigger corps and you know it! That, of course, is just my opinion. I encourage people to check out the truth for themselves – and NOT just on the internet!

This is bullshit propaganda from animal abusers who make money off the abuse. Everyday a greyhound dies somewhere on a track in FL due to injury /lack of care. These dogs spend 23 hrs a day in cages no larger that your dishwasher. The Humane Society of the US has promised to take and adopt out every dog after the ban. This is no ‘proud’ tradition. Animal are not here for our entertainment. We now know better. We should do better. Everyone who loves an animal should vote to BAN DOG RACING!!

      June 4, 2018 at 5:48 pm

Have you ever been to a greyhound farm or track? These dogs are athletes. Keeping them in small cages for that duration of time would stunt their progress as an athlete. These dogs are worth tens of thousands of dollars. Investing that amount of money and treating them poorly wouldn’t make any sense. I believe you’ve been misguided. These dogs make amazing retired pets that are very loving. Dogs who have been abused all their lives aren’t warm or welcoming. I hope you can come to understanding these dogs are cared for

    • Joe T

      June 4, 2018 at 9:28 pm

Sorry but the HSUS doesnt have any adoption groups and you think they will let the greyhounds go to any group that doesnt know about the greyhounds and then adopt them out to people that dont know about their special needs, you are highly mistaken, the HSUS doesnt use money to help animals, It goes to payroll and advertising, look it up yourself, it is a scam group. I t lost its Charity status because of fraud………..

HSUS LOSES CHARITY STATUS WITH MAJOR WATCHDOG GROUPS
      April 8, 2018
In the wake of a sexual harassment scandal that drove CEO Wayne Pacelle out of the top job at Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the group has now lost its accreditation as a charity from several of the nation’s leading charity rating groups, including the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and Charity Navigator.

Humanewatch.org is reporting that the BBB’s charity oversight arm, the Wise Giving Alliance (WGA), has revoked HSUS’ charity status, and Charity Navigator has downgraded its rating to 2 out of 4 stars, with a 1 for poor financial management at the animal rights organization. The news was also reported by several agriculture groups, including Michigan Farm News, Drovers Online, Dairy Herd Management, and Protect the Harvest.

Another oversight group, Animal Charity Evaluators, rescinded its recommendation of HSUS, saying that “ethical leadership and a healthy work environment are critical components of an effective charity.”

Since news of the sexual harassment scandal broke in January, HSUS has struggled to regain its footing. A March 23 story in the Washington Post reported that sexual harassment allegations are not new to HSUS. The woman who succeeded Pacelle as CEO, Kitty Block, was a young lawyer at HSUS twenty-three years ago, when she and a colleague sued her boss, David Wills, then the organization’s Vice President for Investigations, for sexual harassment. Wills was fired as a result of the complaints.

The Post story also reported that some of HSUS’ six-figure donors are outraged that HSUS funds have been used to pay legal settlements related to sexual harassment claims. At least one of those donors, according to the report, is encouraging others to withhold financial support “until a full internal investigation has been completed and all current board members resign except those who voted to remove Pacelle.”

Dont forget they had to pay 15 million plus for witness tampering to further their agenda under the RICO act. LOL prosecuted under a law made for mobsters. And people are supposed to believe this crap coming from Kate McFall and the HSUS shills????

    • Jim

      June 9, 2018 at 2:31 pm

Cynthia, the HSUS runs 0 kennels. Where will they take the dogs to? I assume kill shelters. They give such a small % of their donations to adoption agencies who will not be able to receive all those dogs on their small budgets. Also FYI HSUS says a grey dies every 3 days which is way off. Where did you possibly get the data that says a pup dies daily? Also the crates are about the size of 3 dishwashers as I’ve actually seen them in person, just like you or anyone else can. I understand your beliefs but please don’t invent falsehoods to back your story. It just makes you appear uneducated.

yes and your dogs were panting so hard they shouldnt be out in the heat that long, you also quoted the size of the kennels wrong, you need to do some research and stop with your alternative facts, you looked stupid

  • Karen Greb

    June 4, 2018 at 3:25 pm

If the dogs are so well loved and taken care of, why are these young dogs dying at the rate of one every 3 days. This statistic is confirmed by the Florida Division of Pari-Mutuel Wagering.

    June 4, 2018 at 3:32 pm

Seems to me that I am remembering the phrase “out of state extremists” … and from what I gather, at least two key people in this pro-racing organization don’t even reside in Florida. Florida voters, people who live in this state and know best about this state’s issues, do not want to see animal abuse continue. Which is why YES on 13 will win in November.

    • Craig Laginess

      June 4, 2018 at 3:37 pm

Joyce, while the pro racing team has key members that are out of state, remember that there are two out of state organizations pushing for the passage of 13. Those organizations use lies and deceptions to appeal for donations.

Have you ever been to a track and asked to see behind the scenes as to how much these dogs are loved? If not, please do so. Otherwise, you may live in Florida, but you certainly do not know this beautiful ancient breed that will get watered down should racing end. Bottom line is that I may not live in FL, but I do LOVE greyhounds and care enough for 10,000 not to be suddenly homeless on Dec 31.

      June 4, 2018 at 10:19 pm

Sorry Joyce, you want to talk ethics??? You leader LIES about details of an accident to get people to donate. That’s a fact because she testified in court that she remembered NOTHING from that day. The whole foundation is built on bilking people out of their money on a made up story. You can’t dispute it, it’s in the court record, but you guys always want to skirt around that FACT. Deflect as you want, but as they say in court “It goes to credibility” and Christine Dorchak has NONE.

  • Wendi Tremblay

    June 4, 2018 at 3:48 pm

The irony of the activist statement that “they live in Texas and NC,” is that the head of “Greed2K” lives in MASSACHUSETTS! So she is not in FL either!!! The only reason the head of this group lives in Texas is because Christine Dorchak and her Greed2K got racing banned in her home state of Massachusetts. Yes, she HAD to move. Lives disrupted, and the activists moved on without a penny to adopt out all the dogs left behind. Racing has changed… there are not the large numbers bred now as there were decades ago. 95% of ex racers are adopted from approved groups, and the other 5% are either bred or go home with their owners. The videos you see in their commercials of greyhounds falling in races cuts short before these greyhounds get up and keep running. If they cannot race safely at track pace, they are immediately retired to someone’s couch. The “cocaine” sample in the news last September was a farce too. A split sample was sent to a different lab and came back as NO CANINE DNA. So whose “pee” was it? The head of FL drug testing quit and now lobbies for Greed2K. That should trigger some thought! Nothing is perfect, but our dogs are fed an excellent diet for an athlete, loved beyond belief, and are well cared for. Changes the greyhound industry wants to enhance safety are continually fought by these groups. Why?! We may live in different states, but we all support athletic greyhounds as they are! Should racing end, as these people want, adoption groups will not see one penny from them to support the 10,000 greyhounds suddenly jobless and homeless on December 31st. We will always be there for the dogs, but they will move on. They did in Mass. Anyone who loves animals including greyhounds wants to VOTE – NO – ON – 13!!!!!!!

  • Janet Skinner

    June 4, 2018 at 3:49 pm

How sad that the Florida racing industry has to rely on out of state support to salvage their dying cause in the Sunshine State. This changes nothing – the Committee to Protect Dogs will continue to be the legitimate voice for Florida greyhounds. And we will prevail when Floridians overwhelmingly vote YES on 13 in November!

Unlike G2K & HSUS, we don’t have tens of thousands of dollars to pay fancy lobbyists nor political consultants who charge 10K for a commercial spot. You see, we are all hard working folks just giving our time. I’ve never bred a dog nor owned a racing dog, but I have owned 3 beautiful retired racers which is why I stepped forward to help. We live in Florida, in NC, in GA & elsewhere because Florida retired racers are adopted out all over the country. We have all stepped up to work with people in Florida to see this amendment defeated. Unlike HSUS who paid their CEO 330,000 in base salary in 2016 only to have him resign in disgrace this year as an accused sexual predator, and unlike G2K president and director, based in Massachusetts but forming a PAC in Florida, we are all just volunteers looking to bring the truth to Florida. Once they see happy racers they can then vote for themselves. What are you afraid of Joyce? What are you afraid of G2K? You’re not afraid of the voters hearing from both sides and then deciding for themselves, are you? You’re not afraid for the voters to learn from both sides then make an educated decision…are you? We must have really hit a nerve if the best argument you can come up with is that…you don’t want the voters to hear both sides because a few of our volunteers own property in more than one state.

Greyhound racing is a disgrace to the state of Florida and this new committee is trying to deceive the public by claiming to care about the dogs’ welfare. What a joke. The fact is, according to STATE Records racing dogs die on racetracks by the hundreds. How can a committee claim to care about the dogs’ welfare when dogs die and suffer from broken legs? I hope the public is smart enough to see through the deceptive game the racing industry is playing. Floridians love their dogs and would not want their own pets risking life & limb to race. Floridians need to rescue these greyhounds and Vote YES on 13.

Get your FACTS straight. The Committee to Support Greyhounds is NOT sponsored by any Industry group either NGA or FGA. There are trainers, dog owners, people who are NOT in the industry that have retired racers, and just general people who do not believe the lies of you and who you follow. If you can’t take a little competition, you must be hiding something????

I find it interesting that the main group driving the ammendment 13 do not live in Florida. The 2 principles of the group G2k live in Massachusetts. The Committee to Support Greyhounds is made up of greyhound lovers from across the country. We are tired of the lies being told about the sport of greyhound, we want to get the truth out about how loved and cared for these wonderful athletes are from the time they are born, through their careers, and into retirement. If you live in Florida take the time to visit a track, and see for yourself. We are tired of the lies from out of state animal rights activists who have nothing to do with greyhound or the welfare of greyhounds. We remain #GreyhoundStrong!

Also, the Committee against greyhound racing does not even have greyhounds in their name, it’s simply “Protect Dogs.” That seems to be quite confusing in itself. Not to mention that one look at the “Protect Dogs” page will show that this group is being spearheaded by 2 groups that are not based in Florida.
Our Committee welcomes supporters of this beautiful breed, no matter where you live. We are here to Support Greyhounds by showing the public the TRUTH, so that they will have the REAL facts when they vote FOR the greyhounds by voting NO on 13 in November

Here are some interesting numbers for the racing debate that I researched on the expected or crude death rate among the general population of dogs in the US. Like it or not, in a population as large as the Florida greyhound population, there are going to be deaths because animals sometimes just die. From 2013 to 2018, 448 greyhounds died at tracks in Florida from all causes not just injuries. I wanted to see how this stacks up against the expected national death rate for dogs. According to the National Council on Pet Population Study and Policy (NCPPSP) titled “Birth and Death Rate Estimates of Cats and Dogs in U.S. Households and Related Factors, which can be found at http://www.dvm360.com, the annual crude death rate of dogs in homes is 11 per 1,0000. THESE FIGURES DO NOT INCLUDE ANY ANIMAL THAT WAS EUTHANIZED, and does include dogs that died from disease and injury. This number is actually very low since we all know how many animals are euthanized. But we will go with the 11 per 1,000. So, 11 times 8 (8000 dog population) is 88, times 5.5 ( for the Jan 2013 to June 2018 reporting period for racing greyhounds that died in Florida for any reason) is 480 dogs, i.e. the expected or crude death rate of dogs in the United States. To get an accurate number, you have to add the number of dogs that are euthanized annually by their owners which would obviously offset any error in my computations. I think we can all agree that is a very high number. So, one would expect that 480 dogs would die annually out of that population of animals, plus those put down. Looks like to me, once you factor in dogs that are euthanized in homes, the death rate at tracks is actually much lower than those in homes and surely offsets any changes in population. (So, even if the population is only 6000 dogs, then the death rate is still below the expected crude rate of 458.) So, the Florida death rate amongst greyhounds, which is 448 for the reporting period above and which includes dogs that are euthanized, is actually substantially less than the national crude death rate of 480 expected deaths and even more incredibly less given that the 448 number includes dogs that are euthanized and the 480 crude rate does not. Feel free to check my facts. Vote to keep Florida racing. People who are truly involved and informed know that racing is the greyhound’s best chance.

Here’s a fact that you haven’t mentioned. The death stats you mentioned ONLY record deaths on the tracks. No Stats are kept on the thousands of dogs taken to vets to be euthanized because of injuries. We only know of them because the vets call rescues to come and get the dogs because they don’t want to euthanize a dog simply because it has lost its $$. How do you think these previously injured dogs end up adopted by families.

You know all racing greyhounds have tattoos as identification so if you have proof of this happening please let someone know. I know plenty of groups who would take them in one second.

I have 1 dog the leg was broke and fixed by the owners .The other failed out of racing school and came to me just fine. They were both given to me and not from greyhound adoption groups definitely not sent to be euthanized.

      June 5, 2018 at 6:42 am

Well said Juliana! What the vote yes supporters don’t have as fact is that kennels have Vets who examine and treat dogs daily before, and after racing. They are kept up to date on shots better than our neighbor’s dogs. The kennels are also required by rules and regulations where every dog’s daily intake, physical state, etc. is recorded and reviewed by inspectors. So please Yes people, wake up and do your research before you bash an industry that supports state taxes unlike the organizations trying to end racing which do not. They only support themselves because one is a lobbyist group which your donations are not tax deductible. Research them!

This is a sloppy attempt by dog exploiters to deceive Florida voters and distract from the gruesome facts about greyhound racing.

This Committee only cares about supporting their profits. No one need look any further than state records to see evidence of abuse and neglect on Florida greyhound racing tracks. Fact, a dog dies on a FL track every 3 days. Fact, cocaine & steroids have been found in racing dogs. Fact, racing dogs are caged 20+ hours a day. No dog deserves that kind of life.

These out-of-state racing enthusiasts can try to muddy the waters but the facts will remain clear. I’ll be voting YES on amendment 13 comes election day and I’m confident my fellow Floridians will do the same!

sorry but saying fact doesnt make it TRUE, and the urine sample tested by an outside source confirmed it wasnt canine urine, 20+ hours a day is a known G2k lie, the only ones making the water muddy is G2k and the HSUS, both out of state

  • Renee Leslie

    June 4, 2018 at 9:38 pm

Jennifer Leon, sadly, you have been fed “facts” that are either not the entire truth or outright lies. Let’s go over your “facts.”

    1. A dog does not die on the track every 3 days. The Maasachusetts animal activist group has taken the state’s mandatory reporting number of greyhound deaths over a 3 year period and divided that up to give you this stat. Of course, they don’t bother to tell you that this is any death, which could be from a puppy bring stillborn or dying at birth, to cancer to, yes, an injury beyond repair. Nor do they tell you that more greyhounds are irreparably injured as pets in their own backyards than racing. They are not dying on the tracks as you have been led to believe.

    2. Yes, minute traces of cocaine have been found in urine, which has been determined as “environmental contact” which, again, they don’t bother to tell you. And did you know there is no threshold for testing? In other words, humans who test above a certain threshold would not pass a drug test, same with horses and a number of others, but a greyhound’s threshold is zero! And they probably haven’t told you that the latest cocaine “scandal” that caused a trainer to be banned, was split-tested (half tested in FL, half to an independent lab) and it was determined it was not even canine urine! It was human! Haven’t heard any apologies for spreading that!

    3. Steroids? Seriously! Female dogs take a low-dose birth control, but “steroids” sound scandalous, doesn’t it!

    4. These dogs are not confined 20+ hrs a day. That’s just a bold-faced lie! These are well-conditioned and happy athletes, and they don’t get that way by being confined for periods of time they claim – even though they do like to sleep a good 16hrs a day.

As others have encouraged, even invited, go and see for yourself! These dogs are loved, cared for, played with, known by name and live what they do. Seeing outdated pitiful photos and from other countries sure stirs up strong emotions but they do not tell you the truth. It’s out there. All we ask is you go see with your own eyes before you condemn something you really know little about.

Another hour another LIE found – From this Committee to Protect Dogs
    ——————————————————————————————-
Are greyhounds used in racing drugged?
Yes. Over the past decade there have been 419 greyhound drug positives at Florida tracks, including 68 greyhound cocaine positives, and positive results for novocaine, lidocaine, industrial solvent DMSO, and opiates oxycodone and oxymorphone. Greyhound breeders claim cocaine positives are from environmental contamination, a ridiculous theory that has never been proven in a single case. The state agrees this scenario is unlikely: “The Division finds it is much more likely that a prohibited substance is provided to a racing animal purposely by the animal’s trainer.”
    ———————————————————————————————
Guess they didnt read the “FINDING OF FACTS” from Judge Stevenson
    Interesting reading http://www.supportgreyhounds.org/letters/ruling3718.pdf
But why let FACTS or esteemed Scientists get in the way of a good LIE
    ———————————————————————————————-
    29. Dr. Cynthia Cole is a veterinarian and pharmacologist,
who acted as the director of the UF Lab from 2003 to 2006.
Dr. Cole testified that BZE and EME are “naturally occurring
substances,” in the strict sense that they are metabolites of
cocaine and would be naturally produced by any animal that has
    ingested cocaine.

    30. Dr. Cole also conceded that levels of cocaine below
100 (ng/mL) would be very unlikely to have any effect on a
racing animal’s performance, and that such low levels could be
the result of environmental contamination. Of the 24 positive
tests cited against Petitioners, the highest concentration of a
cocaine metabolite was 36.5 ng/mL. Even that appeared to be an
outlier, as most of the concentrations were in the range of 10
    to 15 ng/mL.
    31. Dr. Thomas Tobin, a veterinarian, pharmacologist, and
toxicologist, testified that trace amounts of cocaine are
present virtually everywhere in North American human society.
Dr. Tobin stated that less than 50 ng/mL of urinary BZE is
indicative of nothing more than that the subject lives in North
America. Dr. Tobin testified that a very small concentration of
cocaine metabolites in the urine is likely attributable to
environmental contamination. Dr. Tobin stated that when the
concentration is below pharmacological significance, it should
not be called a positive. He noted that in human drug testing,
a sample is first screened at 150 ng/mL and then confirmed at
100 ng/mL, at which point it is reported as positive. Dr. Tobin
could think of no scientific reason why there should be a
regulatory reporting threshold for humans but not for racing
    animals.

    32. Cocaine is rapidly absorbed and metabolized, and may
enter a dog’s body through the mouth, the mucous membranes, or
through the skin. Dr. Tobin opined that the very small
concentrations of cocaine metabolites found in Petitioners’
greyhounds suggest exposure to the drug via touch, soon before
the urine sample was taken. He found this significant because
of the manner in which urine is collected from racing greyhounds
    in Florida.
    33. Shortly before the first race begins for each 15-race
card, greyhound trainers customarily arrive at the track
detention facility with their greyhounds for weigh-in. The
trainers then leave their greyhounds in the care of track
personnel. Between weigh-in and the end of a greyhound’s race,
the dog has no physical contact with its trainer, while it has
    extensive contact with track personnel.
    34. After weigh-in, and approximately 30 minutes before
the first race begins, track personnel identified as “leadouts,”
take the greyhounds into a locked area called a “ginny
pit.” Track personnel supervise the dogs in this area; trainers
and owners are not allowed to be present. The urine sampling of
a racing greyhound takes place just prior to the greyhound’s
scheduled race. Depending on when a greyhound is scheduled to
race, its urine may be sampled several hours after its last
    contact with its trainer.

    35. Veterinarian assistants employed by the Division catch
racing greyhounds’ urine during the sampling process. The
Division does not drug-test its veterinarian assistants.

AGAIN, lets not let that pesky science get in the way of a good LIE
    ——————————————————————————–
    From Committee to Protect Dogs

Are greyhounds used in racing given anabolic steroids?
Yes. Female greyhounds are routinely given an anabolic steroid to prevent a loss of race days. In 2017 legislative testimony, the Florida Greyhound Association estimated that 50% of female dogs are given this drug. This practice is outlawed in greyhound racing in Great Britain, Australia and New Zealand, due to integrity and animal welfare concerns. Industry handbook Care of the Racing and Retired Greyhound states that anabolic steroid use can result in serious harmful side effects including increased aggression and virilization. According to the Merck Veterinary Manual: “Longterm suppression of estrus by using androgens is not advised, because it is not documented to be safe in breeding bitches … the safety and efficacy of injectable testosterone, as practiced commonly in racing Greyhounds, has not been supported by controlled studies and is not advised.”

    ———————————————————————————————————
There is absolutely no clinical evidence that the use of testosterone to delay estrus in female racing greyhounds is harmful to the dogs when given at the right dosage.

Dr. Lynda Blythe in The Care of the Racing and Retired Greyhound states “Preventing a greyhound female from cycling actually prevents damage to her musculoskeletal system and keep her from injuring herself” The textbook notes that male hormones also are regularly used to prevent estrus in show dogs and hunting dogs.

I will take Dr. Fenwicks word over those of the activists, here is the source
    http://www.supportgreyhounds.org/letters/Fenwick.pdf
    ———————————————————————————————–
This gentleman quotes from the same Merck Manual, wonder why they are missing that page – From Dr. Gillette
Proper use of testosterone seems to have minimal effect on the reproductive system of the female. Female Greyhouds do not seem to have anymore reproductive problems than other breeds. At this time estrus suppression is the optimal method to manage female greyhounds and the use of a proper testosterone regimen is the method of choice.
    Source: http://www.supportgreyhounds.org/letters/gillette.pdf
    —————————————————————————————————-
Again proof that they wont let pesky scientific facts by some of the foremost experts in the country get in the way of the campaign of misinformation and LIES. After all thats why the are “The Worldwide Leader in LIES”, and my two posts PROVE it!

  • Dick Ciampa

    June 5, 2018 at 1:04 am

    Jennifer,

It is okay for you to hate me, but I hope you take a deep breath and read what I am say. G2K counts on people not reading everything they say. Christine Dorchak is the person who wrote the law that was passed about reporting deaths at the tracks in Florida. So I want you to ask her if I am telling you the truth.

When she wrote the law that was enacted by the Florida legislature she wrote it to deceive people. Those reported deaths are not all on the track. The law reads Florida kennels have to report any greyhound death on track grounds. When the law was passed deaths started to be reported the beginning of June 2013. In those 7 months there were 74 reported deaths at the Florida tracks. According to G2K’s website 42% of those deaths were race related which is 31. 23% they weren’t sure if they were race related or not. That would 17 dogs. Not race related was also 23% or 17 again and 12% was unknown which is 9.

Ask her, I’m not lying. This is a far cry from having everyone think 74 dogs died during a race.

As far as the cocaine found in the greyhounds did Christine or Carey ever mention how many tests were done to put this in some perspective? They like to go back to 2008 so 10 years. There have been 71 positives in 10 years. In those 10 years there have been 440,586 tests done on the greyhounds with 71 positives. That is 0.016% of the tests were positive.

Most of these positives were not for cocaine, but the cocaine metabolite Benzolyecgonine.

This is important because there is no one that would think Benzolyeconine is a performance enhancer. Did anyone from G2K mention that?

In the 106 months up to May 1, 2016 there were 28 of these positives. Steve Sarras, NGA board member, had a kennel in Florida for 50 of those months with no positives and Julia Ward, NGA president, ran some dogs in Steve’s kennel. For the next 17 months dogs kept testing positive in Florida and most were at Steve’s kennel. the original trainer got suspended and with a new trainer there were more positives. Steve gave up his booking at Orange Park and Ancient City Racing got a booking and took over many of the dogs that were in Steve’s kennel. Ashley Bouthillier was the trainer and amazingly one of Steve’s dogs tested positive. Three different trainers and a change in kennel ownership and there were still positives from the biggest names in greyhound racing. In this time period the only other positives in Florida were one at Sanford Orlando and 6 at Derby Lane. The 6 at Derby Lane all happened in a 10 day period with 5 of the 6 happening in a 3 day period. This may not seem odd except 5 of the 6 positives at Derby Lane were owned by the biggest breeder in the country, Vince Berland.

Did you know 35 of the 71 positives were thrown out in court mainly because of the collection process with no one from the kennel being allowed to watch.

The reason May 1, 2016 is a date I mentioned is because that is when there was a change of directors at the Florida Pari-Mutuel Wagering Division. That person’s name is Tony Glover and there have been a few change of directors over these 10 years and it didn’t seem like a big deal Mr. Glover resigned the beginning of October 2017.

None of this was anything anyone thought twice about until Mr. Glover because a lobbyist for G2K in November 2017.

    Coincidence?

I will leave everyone with one last bit of information. When urine is collected the sample is split in case there is a positive and the person wants to have the second sample tested. Steve did want the second sample tested, but not for drugs, he wanted the second sample sent to a different lab to have it DNA tested to make sure it was his dogs urine and not either another dogs urine or urine from not just his dog in the sample.

The urine was sent to the University of Cal Davis and the results came back as not bison, cat, cattle, deer, dog, goat horse, mouse, pig, rabbit, rat or sheep.

People can draw their own conclusion.

Jennifer, you can hate me forever, but if I made you or others reading this think about what they have been told is true then I’m glad I wrote it.

When the truth is against you you can’t tell the whole truth. When you have to take the few and make them the many something is wrong. You have to be lying. Are there bad people in the greyhound industry? There are still some I’m sure, but any industry has some bad apples. If you are a nurse I bet I can find a number of nurses that did bad things, but that wouldn’t make all nurses bad.

Animal rights people pick animals to “save” because who is for treating animals in an inhumane way? PETA takes in almost 100 million dollars a year. The HSUS over 120 million and the ASPCA is over 200 million a year. This is what the greyhound industry is up against. It won’t be easy as money usually wins elections, but once in a while David does beat Goliath.

Keep in mind that if the amendment passes millions in tax revenue will be lost. There is neither an economic, nor an ethical argument for the continuation of greyhound racing. As a business it is an unmitigated failure requiring subsidies and bailouts and ethically the commodification and exploitation of innocent greyhounds for profit in indefensible. In November the people of Florida will have a chance to remove this drag on the economy and blight on society.

I am a Board member of GREY2K USA Worldwide, an organization that fights to save these marvelous creatures all over the globe. (you can learn more about us here: http://www.grey2kusa.org.) I have fostered and adopted rescued racing greyhounds since 1995. I cannot imagine abandoning any of them when they become injured, old or sick and yet this is routinely what happens to them at operating tracks and will continue to happen as long as racing is allowed to exist.

Thanks for participating Fred Barton, now I will add, that Grey2k, has neither an economic, nor ethical argument for it’s continuation. As a business, it is an unmitigated failure, (I believe it filed for BK in Mass after it was sued and lost also), it requires subsidies from people who have the wool pulled over their eyes with lies and distortion of facts (IE Donate Here), and ethically the commodification (Donate Here buttons) and exploitation of innocent greyhound breeders, trainers and other employees for profit is indefensible! In November, the people of Florida will vote, and they will vote NO, just as they did in Massachusetts several times, before your organization misled the people into letting it pass. You have a good day, I will not waste one moment of my time trying to change the mind of a FANATIC, and the rest of you should keep that in mind, don’t waste your time on the FANATICS, they cannot be reasoned with or understand facts that may not suite their agenda, they also cannot go out and learn for themselves and draw their own opinion, so please ignore people like this, they are a waste of time, focus on the people that actually want to learn the truth and can think for themselves, invite them to come learn on their own, not be told by a group of FANATICS that twist truths to suite agendas. And as long as you are participating Fred, why don’t you enlighten all the Florida Voters with how much money Grey2k has given since it’s inception to greyhound adoption, and the number of Greyhounds that Grey2k has actually adopted, and surely, you will have names to back up your claims, you are so well organized, and it is such an important thing, so please post a link to those dogs, as I am sure you cannot fit such an extensive list in this comment section……..or can you?

For someone who “will not waste one moment of my time trying to change the mind of a FANATIC” you sure write long posts. And then closing with a question implies you want to spend more time with said fanatic.

But more to the point, attacking the messenger doesn’t change the message. As the industry’s own evidence shows greyhound racing in cruel and innocent dogs suffer and die daily as their owners pursue what little profit there is in this so called “sport.”

I see. So you ask a question that you know is irrelevant and when I don’t answer it you declare victory and go home. Is that the master strategy? Prop 13 is about ending the confinement, suffering and unnecessary deaths greyhounds endure in racing gulags all across the state. Wisconsin realized greyhound racing was a money loser and got out; Iowa realized greyhound racing was a money loser and got out; Arizona realized greyhound racing was a money loser and got out; Colorado, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island all got out and many more had the good sense not to get in. As I said, as a business an unmitigated disaster.

Using greyhounds as a means to an end (profit) and then discarding them is morally bankrupt and ethically reprehensible. This November the people of Florida will hav an opportunity to right these wrongs.

Yes Iowa has one track, but it has been abandoned by the state and the casinos who previously supported it with subsidies (which was my point). How long do you think it will last?

It is never OK to drug, abuse and euthanize animals for human entertainment!
Vote YES to Ban Dog Racing!!!
It loses money in FL and the tax payers subsidize this cruelty.
The adoptees make great pets because the were lucky enough to escape the brutality. Makin money foo of cruelty is abhorent.

I have done my research and find the greyhounds
are well taken care of. Don’t believe the lies put forth
by Grey2K. It would be a shame to close the tracks.
    Vote NO on amendment 13
