Margate City Commission votes to support dog racing ban
A view of Margate, Florida.

The Margate City Commission has now joined other municipalities that support a proposed constitutional amendment banning betting on live greyhound racing.

Commissioners on Sept. 26 unanimously approved a resolution (see below) supporting passage of Amendment 13.

Such measures don’t have any effect of law but can be important in swaying public opinion.

Margate, in Broward County, is the fourth Florida city to officially endorse.

It follows Venice (near the Sarasota Kennel Club), Tallahassee, and Hallandale Beach, home to The Big Easy Casino and racetrack.

Amendment 13, if it gets at least 60 percent approval on the November ballot, would ban live racing beginning in 2021.

But greyhound racing supporters, such as Committee to Support Greyhounds, have said racing “has been a proud Florida tradition for decades” and creates jobs.

We’re so proud to have the support of these municipalities! Dogs play an important role in our lives and deserve to be protected. That’s why Amendment 13 is supported by hundreds of community leaders, including veterinarians, local animal shelters, Congressman Matt Gaetz, the Florida College Democrats, Mike Huckabee, and the League of Women Voters.

PETA kills thousands of animals every year. That’s cruel. It killed 2324 animals out of the 2626 it acquired in 2014 and it only had a 1% adoption rate!! In 2015 it killed 1494 animals, and last year 1441 were put to death. That have put to death 13774 animals in the last 13 years and it encourages pounds across the country to put even more to death. And people think that dog racing is cruel? I have owned Greyhounds raced Greyhounds, known trainers, and been to the track many many times, and dog racing is not cruel in any way shape or form. They treat those animals like gold. PETA is cruel to animals, and they are the ones that should be banned forever. All these groups that are against greyhound racing are telling nothing but lies and falsehoods! The trainers the owners and people around greyhound racing love greyhounds and I hope this sport goes on for a very very long time.

Hey rabinowitz….get your fucking facts right. PETA is not an “animal shelter.” Their job is not to serve as a drop-off point for people who no longer “want” their pets or to house strays. So understand that point first…before you drinking the kool-aid of hunters, puppy mills and other anti-PETA groups.

Mr. Ornstein first of all let me say watch your filthy mouth. Second of all PETA stands.for people for the ethical treatment of animals! Do you find ethical treatment of animals putting down thousands and thousands of animals a year ? Do you find that to be ethical?? I don’t, so you are the one that needs to get the facts right! Greyhound racing is not cruel to animals, however killing thousands of animals every year is cruel, and disgusting, and Despicable! No on 13! No no no on 13! PETA is all lies!

Mr. Carey Theil who doesn’t care about Polo Horses as he took their endorsement.
Mr. Carey Theil who paid of the Director of Pari-Mutuel Wagering. Funny how more bad test occurred under him then in the last 3 years combined. Funny how he now works for you as a lobbyist!

Thank you, City of Margate! All dogs deserve loving homes, not short, sad lives used as tools of the gambling industry. Thank you for supporting Yes on 13!

Cheers to you Margate City Commission as you recognize that Margate residents, like the overwhelming majority of Florida citizens, love dogs and want to see them protected. ALL dogs, which includes greyhounds. Sweet, gentle, loving greyhounds who only want a human to love and a comfy couch on which to sleep. YES ON 13!
