Alimony reform group parts way with ‘fugitive’ Terry Power

power, terry - in red shirt
And it’s about time.

Calling recent Facebook posts by the Florida Family Law Reform PAC boneheaded would be charitable, at best.

However, one major move by the group should help restore some semblance of credibility.

Terry Power, the group’s fugitive figurehead and donut boy, has reportedly been given the boot.

And it’s about time.

After all, the alimony reformers do have a few valid arguments. Florida is indeed the largest of just seven states that still have permanent alimony laws on the books.

Earlier this month, SB 1596, filed by Sen. Gayle Harrell, and HB 1325, filed by Rep. Brad Drake, began their journey through the 2019 Legislative Session. (For the record, I haven’t taken a position on the legislation.)

However, Power — a failed Florida House candidate — ensured alimony reformers got a bad rap in the press and in the minds of legislators whose votes they need in order to have a prayer of getting a bill passed.

The good news is the Florida Family Law Reform PAC has finally realized that Power is no good for their mission, and in fact has hindered their work AND kept any meaningful reform from making it through the Legislature during at least two separate previous attempts.

Now, after jeopardizing a third bite at the apple, sources close to our team informed us that the alimony reformers have had enough of the former PAC Chairman — a title he dropped when he decided to run for House District 64 in late 2017.

Their decision to give Power the boot should not come as a surprise, since he has been a fugitive from justice for months.

His current status stems from his long and arduous divorce from his ex-wife, Murielle Fournier. If it sounds familiar, that’s because it was the subject of a series of articles published by one of the Tampa Bay Times’ most recognized journalists.

Their case was reopened last June after Power filed paperwork to run in the GOP primary against state Rep. Jamie Grant.

After mediation failed, Power refused to pay his ex-wife any further alimony. The judge presiding over the case, unsurprisingly, issued a contempt order.

Power has been on the lam since. Alimony reformers would be wise to leave him in the past, regroup, and redefine their mission.

Kudos to the Florida Family Law Reform PAC for leaving the bespectacled retirement consultant in the dust. Maybe now folks can focus on the alimony debate rather than the circus that is Terry Power.

Let’s just hope jettisoning him means they get their Facebook page under control, too. Seriously.

You bullied your own daughter into a boy yet refused to use the proper pronoun when you refer to him as a her….stop before you hurt you’re last child. Google you’re own name and see who bullies every person you come into contact.

Rita you might want to stop using the politics of the Dec in order to make hateful comments. You don’t bully someone into being a boy. Also taking something like that which is private and using it in order to shame someone is pretty low. You know very little about these issues, you do not realize that when opponents spoke out the last time alimony reform popped up, those who were for it got the information on opponents using Florida’s sunshine laws in order to harass speakers. Several people backed down due to the actions of this group and their members. Just because you are angry with me or other members of the Dec, you really should not be taking that anger to make statements of which you know nothing. I don’t have to defend anything to you. Again you know nothing.

Florida Family Law Reform is not the right group to even submit such a bill. A group of individuals should be hand picked by our Governor, from social workers, insurance underwriters, psychologists, estate planners, that are not in the alimony game, to take a fresh and honest look at what needs to be changed and how best to implement it without hurting anymore people financially and psychologically from these years of total disrespectful, misogynistic banter and threats. The state of Florida is looking like a “ circus” to the rest of the states. Start over, with solid studies and do it right so it’s as fair as possible to all parties.

And they ditched the 50/50 parenting section of the bill because they never cared about the people in the custody part they just wanted their money and support. Absolutely selfish and dishonest!!! None of this reform can happen without social impact studies.

The unfortunate part is that the “donut” narcissist who is Terry Power will always lurk in the shadows forever convincing naive alimony payers that he is their last hope when in fact, all he did was manipulate them into making donations with empty promises for reform. After all the hype, all the misguided efforts, and all the money wasted, their alimony reform bill never saw the light of day at even one committee stop. There are many reasons for the bill dying on the vine. I can site the addition of retroactivity to the bill, which was denied to alimony reformers in the past, as was the child sharing component of the thoughtless draft. I can site the fact that the selfish and uninformed leaders of the so called PAC never connected with legislative leadership or leadership with the Family Section of the Florida Bar to negotiate any sort of compromise or even discussion about possibilities. The strategy of the PAC leadership was to feed on the emotional frustration of alimony payers by taking a shotgun approach and by putting as many unrealistic expectations for reform into the bill as possible. Making empty promises are what narcissists do best. Unfortunately, those promises are exactly what people want to hear and believe. But the main reason for the failed bill was the lack of credibility and professionalism of the people running the organization. To say the crazies were in charge of the asylum would be an understatement. That is not to say that everyone involved with the PAC is out of their mind. But not to learn and build upon from many years of prior success is just foolish. Prior bills passed every legislative committee to get to the final stop of the Governors signature. Why not build upon that success? Why not get something instead of nothing? Nah, let’s instead lie outright to our membership about all that prior success, convince them that past legislative efforts were wrong, and instead draft a new, exciting bill with all the stuff alimony payers want, but with zero chance of getting through the legislative process. That is certainly rational thinking indeed. Alimony reform in Florida could now be set back years due to such nonsensical actions. The pity of it all is that the PAC members have no one to blame but themselves for trusting false leadership and ultimately being dupped by a fugitive who has left them holding the proverbial bag. Terry Power should return to Florida to face his “loyal” membership. But alas, snakes in the grass often just slither away without reprise or detection. The need for Alimony reform in Florida is real. Hopefully credible leaders will step foreword and pick up some of the usable broken pieces left by this sad reform group to, once again, allow alimony reform to be a worthwhile topic of discussion and positive votes within the Florida Legislature.

Alan Frisher you were ousted out of family law reform. Have you forgotten that you paid yourself a generous $2000 per month salary out of the donations from lifetime alimony payers. Whoever ‘Free the Slaves” is, doesn’t remember the 4-5 years of initial alimony reform involvement of laying foundation, making contacts, and learning the system without ever earning a dime. This alias of a disgusting human has the gall to criticize without knowledge. The monthly amount that was paid to me was Board approved because of the all of the time/effort that was utilized for reform and taken from my personal life, and only after doing it for 5 years prior without earning a cent. I wonder how often you have worked long hours, sacrificing family and other business without getting paid? How long could you last doing that type of work if you weren’t independently wealthy. If you figured out what 2k per month amounted to for the hours worked, you’d be ashamed you even mentioned it. But it helped me pay some bills, and I will never apologize for asking for it, or getting it. The current leaders are so proud of saying that they weren’t paid anything for their efforts. I’m happy for them. Instead they gave away all of the money contributed by heard working alimony payers without getting any results whatsoever. It was all for nothing. ZERO results from leadership (HA Ha) who fled the State. Their empty promise of a bill never made it past one committee stop in 2019. Money well worth spent indeed. I think the bitterness is coming from whoever Free the Slaves is, as he/she too was hoodwinked by false leadership and empty promises. And again, If whoever Free the Slaves is could do better than I did in the past….go for it. I welcome the effort. But you won’t, because you can’t afford to take time away from your job, or your family, or your critical nature. Life sure sucks for you!!

Alan are you describing the hard work stay at home mothers put in without getting paid a dime, no retirement, no overtime? You want to get paid for work you deem necessary and stay at home mothers should also be paid for their hard work if their marriage fails. You just proved how much these alimony reform bills need to go away. You just proved the need for alimony in one post. And the PAC with Terry Power is a nightmare. Terrorizing ex spouses and fleeing jurisdictions just to avoid their responsibilities. Florida laws already allow for modifications and the men who say their modifications were denied….I bet the Judge had ample reason for it. Posting articles about how to hide assets and how to evade court orders is despicable. I am glad the bill died and I the only Alimony Reform I will ever back is for new marriages only so both partners can make informed decisions on education, careers, childcare, ect. Everyone knows this is the only way to make things right on both sides.

And how can anyone forget the day Senator Benaquisto admonished you for your describing alimony recipients as riding the alimony gravy train? One thing most of us can agree on is the damage done to Florida’s families and workers with current Florida Family Law. Workers are penalized, non-workers are rewarded and children are caught in the middle. Regrettably, changing the law is like eating an elephant…one bite at a time. Otherwise you choke and die, like this year’s chance at meaningful alimony reform. Finding the right formula for success may require smaller bites, no matter how much that stinks. “Fair” is not in the law’s vocabulary, but “equitable” is. A predictable, equitable end to a failed marriage would not only save stress, tension and additional conflict, but a lot of money, which is why there is such resistance to alimony reform in the first place. Follow the money.
    Common Sense is So Uncommon!

Only a very few of these comments had anything to do with the actual meaning of this article, much less about an alimony reform bill. A social impact study needs to be done. Those involved in writing a reform bill, SHOULD NOT have a dog in the fight. How can they be impartial? This said committee can listen to both sides, but the above play ground name calling, bullying, and gossip, is just a total embarrassment to both sides.

The bill is dead this year. You all didn’t even get to pet this elephant, much less get a bite. The circus train is loaded up and moving on.

Get an impartial group together, and a mediator, and do it as fairly as possible, if not for yourselves, but future generations, maybe like our children? If you want to be part of an historical change, first act respectfully. Honey catches a lot more bees. I think we are all tired of the venom.

      March 25, 2019 at 11:52 am

Yes! Let’s waste even more time and spend money on studying how paying lifetime alimony impacts the life of the payer. Ridiculous idea. How about looking at what other states do and realize that Florida needs to abolish the antiquated laws and catch up with the rest of the states. Take a look at New Hampshire–they reformed their alimony in the last year. Research what most states do–in fact National Family Family Law including Alimony Reform is in order. Otherwise, that Plan B is starting to look quite enticing. What is it–move out of Florida to another country, another state, just disappear and stop paying anymore. It’s time for a rebellion and for all payers to rise up and not dutifully pay the lifetime alimony anymore.

Sure, people will listen to you now after all you did for them. Why don’t you continue to transfer all of your assets to your girlfriend to protect yourself financially, something you admitted to me that you did way back when that I would be happy to testify in court about. I wonder what the CFP board would have to say about you? Hmm… fugitive, contempt charge….sure I’d certainly allow you to work with my retirement money—NOT!! And you’re mentioning my Halloween outfit? Free the slaves, Terry Power. Your choice of referring to yourself as a slave is a very undignified and wrong in so many ways, but your First Husbands page was nothing but denigrating garbage towards women on a constant basis. If you put as much effort into making an equitable agreement with a woman you once, yes loved, married and was totally supported by, who had to bury her twenty five year old during your separation, you would not be in Texas and now the laughing stock of of a group who you believed you were leading to greener pastures. Instead, its become an colossal fail in every way. Pigs get fat and hogs get slaughtered. Well my friend, bacon anyone? Those with the most skin in this game is not getting any younger. These are supposed to be the beginning of those promised golden years before our health and minds are gone. This bill has blown up many families with children, who are now adults, forced along the way to take sides. Money wins in many games, and the others, say enough and just leave. The example they have had makes none of them want to marry and so many young men have become misogynistic just like their fathers, and daughters afraid to ever marry. Can you just stop. Make right by your ex wife, be happy you have someone you love, a plane to fly and a life yet to live, before it’s too late. The stress on both sides of the table is only going to put many of us in an early grave. You can’t take it with you. All this fighting only makes attorneys a lot more busy and better golden state years than any of the haters in your group. Time to do the right thing Terry. Be a man your grandchildren would be proud of. This just has to end. There has been enough pain and down right hate. Stop. Regroup. There is a right way to form change and a wrong way. Your leadership has broken up your own family and hundreds of others. You have inflicted so much pain to people you have never even met. Visit a hospice center and look around. Life is precious and this fight and your First Husbands hate group is nothing but vile. Just stop. Then maybe you can be an example of a real man,by doing things right.
