As hurricane season gets underway, up-to-the-minute information on Florida’s Hurricane Catastrophe Fund is critical for insurers and policyholders, who face massive damages in the event of a major storm.

Fred Karlinsky, one of the top insurance lawyers in the nation, was again tapped to give the legislative update at the Florida Hurricane Catastrophe Fund Annual Participating Insurers Workshop, held this past week at the Coronado Springs Resort at Walt Disney World.

Karlinsky, an industry lobbyist and sought-after expert on insurance-related legislative initiatives, is a shareholder in the Fort Lauderdale and Tallahassee offices of international law firm Greenberg Traurig. He has delivered the annual legislative update since 2008, when he was a workshop panelist.

Created by the Florida Legislature in 1993 after Hurricane Andrew, the Florida Hurricane Catastrophe Fund (FHCF) is designed to protect insurers’ ability to continue offering hurricane insurance by reimbursing a portion of storm-related losses.

As co-chair of Greenberg Traurig’s Insurance Regulatory and Transactions Practice Group, Karlinsky has represented a wide range of insurance interests throughout the U.S. He is recognized as one of the top insurance lawyers in America by Chambers and Partners, which has ranked law firms and lawyers in more than 185 jurisdictions worldwide since 1990.

Karlinsky brought to the Workshop an extensive knowledge of insurance compliance matters, as a thought leader to both domestic and international insurance executives and governmental officials.

Since 2008, Karlinsky also been an adjunct professor at Florida State University, teaching Insurance Law & Economics: Theory & Applications, a class at the FSU College of Law.

The Florida Insurance Council recently awarded him its Outstanding Leadership Award.
