Praise for Carlos Trujillo

Has anyone else but me noticed that there have been more than a few stories on controversial bills that carry the name “Trujillo?”

Good for him.

Too often, too many lawmakers come to Tallahassee to go along and get along. But when you choose to take on the FMA or Publix or abortion clinics in your career – that takes guts. But when you take them on all at once in three different bills, well that’s worthy of a 10-gallon hat tip.

Trujillo is sponsoring three different bills that promise to be hotly contested this Session and are sure to keep his calendar more than full.

He wants to put more restrictions/regulations on abortion clinics. We know what that means … press, calls, endless meetings, and, I am certain, a truckload of both love and hate mail. Then he has a bill that puts him toe-to-toe with the medical community with his attempt to fix balance billing for emergency medical services. That’s the one where he lifts a few bits from Obamacare and wants them to apply to payment for docs who provide emergency services – we can see several avenues of angst with that one. This will pit his party and those who hate all things Obamacare against the insurance providers. That will leave a mark.

And finally, he is lead sponsor of the so-called “whiskey and Wheaties” (aka “Tear Down That Wall!”) bill. OK, it’s not exactly the symbolic end of the Cold War, but as far as the battle brewing between large retailers and liquor stores goes, “war” might not be the worst adjective to use.

So why should we praise Trujillo?

You gotta hand it to the man. Not just one, or two, but potentially three red-hot issues. No matter what side you are on, Carlos Trujillo gets our brave soldier of the year award.
