Give credit to … for breaking the news about the Seminole Compact deal

dixon, matt

“They do this at 8 o’clock at night?”

That was the first thing an exasperated Jim Rosica, one of our state Capitol reporters, said to me once I got him on the telephone after news of Gov. Rick Scott reaching a deal with the Seminole Tribe of Florida hit the Twitterverse.

Rosica and the rest of the Capitol Press Corps raced each other to break the news about the new Compact. So who won the race?

It certainly wasn’t me. I’m with my family in St. Augustine for the Nights of Lights. I was literally on the Holly Jolly Trolley when one of Florida’s top lobbyists gave me the heads-up.

The Associated Press’ Gary Fineout, usually first with news out of the Governor’s Office, first tweeted that there was a disturbance in the force at 7:43 p.m.

Fineout and Marc Caputo of POLITICO Florida got into some Fineout-Caputo-Schorsch action as they both competed to tweet our instant analysis of the deal. Rarely do you see we three leaders of the Rebel Alliance squabble, but then again Chewie, Han, and Luke didn’t always get along, either.

For the record, Caputo tweeted about the Compact at 7:53 p.m., six minutes after his colleague Matt Dixon first wrote about it.

So now you know who Travis Blanton‘s favorite reporter is.
