Gov. Rick Scott has tapped Dr. Fernando Valverde for the Board of Governors of the State University System, the Governor’s Office has said in a news release.

In 2010, Valverde was a member on Scott’s Health and Human Services Transition Team, tasked with brainstorming ideas for reform at the state’s Department of Health.

Valverde, 56, of Miami, has been Florida regional president of Humana, one of Florida’s largest Medicare health benefits companies, since January.

According to a news release upon his 2014 appointment, Valverde is responsible “for continued development and expansion of Humana’s Medicare business in the South and North Florida regions.”

He previously was the CEO of Florida International University Health and associate dean for community and clinical affairs at its College of Medicine, according to an online biography.

Valverde also has been a council member at The Patricia and Philip Frost Art Museum, as a board director for the Miami Art Central Museum, and as board president for the Atlantis Academy School for Children with Learning Disabilities in Miami.

He received his medical degree from Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra in Santiago, Dominican Republic.

He is appointed to a vacant seat from this past Friday until Jan. 6, 2019, the Governor’s news release said. The appointment is subject to confirmation by the Florida Senate.
