Nurses union endorses Val Demings in CD 10 race

Val Demings

The American Nurses Association has endorsed Val Demings in the Democratic primary race for Congressional District 10.

The association represents 3.4 million nurses nationwide.

“The American Nurses Association is proud to endorse Val Demings as our candidate in Florida’s 10th Congressional District,” Willa Fuller, executive director of the Florida Nurses Association, stated in a news release issued by Demings’ campaign. “We believe that Val truly understands the issues Central Florida nurses are facing. Her personal experiences in the healthcare system have allowed her to see firsthand the struggles nurses are facing regarding staffing and mobility in the workplace. We are confident Val will be a great champion for the thousands of nurses in Central Florida.”

Demings, a former Orlando police chief, faces state Sen. Geraldine Thompson of Orlando, businessman Bob Poe of Orlando and lawyer Fatima Rita Fahmy in the Democratic primary for CD 10, which covers much of west Orange County. Businesswoman Thuy Lowe is running for the Republicans.

The district offers an open seat, because Republican incumbent U.S. Rep. Dan Webster has switched to CD 11 to run this year.

“Nurses are the heart of our healthcare system,” Demings stated. “I’m grateful to receive the endorsement of the American Nurses Association during National Nurses Week. This week is a time where we praise and celebrate the dedication and selflessness nurses bring into the workplace, day in and day out. Working the midnight shift as a police officer, I saw nurses tirelessly serving patients in the most chaotic of situations, at all hours of the day. Their continued commitment to the job inspires me and I look forward to advocating on behalf of those men and women.”
