U.S. Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey, now a Democratic presidential candidate, is slated to speak in Miami Gardens Sunday to discuss implementing legislation for Amendment 4, which Booker has previously described as a “poll tax.”
The event, hosted by Mo Space at Miami Soul Cafe, is listed on Booker’s campaign website.
“Join Cory Booker for a conversation on voting rights,” the event page reads. “Doors will open at 3:00 p.m.”
The issue of voting rights has earned a lot of attention in recent days, as the Florida House recently approved implementing legislation for Amendment 4.
That amendment, approved by voters in November, restored voting rights for nonviolent felons after they complete “all terms” of their sentence.
The House measure requires the payments of all court fines and fees to be paid before a person can have their voting rights restored.
Those fines can, at times, run into the thousands of dollars, prompting Democrats such as Booker to label the measure a “poll tax.”
Florida Republicans, however, maintain the language in the amendment was vague, and are simply enacting what the voters approved in November.
Following Booker’s Miami Gardens event on voting rights, he’s scheduled to hold a fundraiser in Miami Beach on Sunday evening.
