Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell announced Friday the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) awarded $10 million to Monroe and Miami-Dade counties.

The lucrative award came as a result of damage sustained during last year’s Hurricane Irma, and just in time for the start of Florida’s 2019 Hurricane Season, which began June 1.

“Severe weather is becoming more common due to climate change, so it is imperative that the federal government uphold its commitment to local communities after a storm hits, but also as our community prepares for increased extreme weather events,” said Mucarsel-Powell, who sits on the Economic Development, Public Buildings & Emergency Management Subcommittee of the Transportation & Infrastructure Committee.

“I’m pleased the federal government continues to help South Florida, and I will continue working with everyone to increase our preparedness and resiliency for the future.”

Of the grant awarded, $8,506,848 is going to debris cleanup in Monroe County. When added to another recent grant, that brings Monroe’s total debris removal award to $14,418,627. The remaining award, $1,780,625 in federal funding is being issued to Miami-Dade County to fortify central wastewater systems that experienced problems due to flooding.

While Mucarsel-Powell has been busy helping to ready her district for hurricane season, that hasn’t stopped her from speaking out on other important issues to her constituents, including veterans affairs and immigration law.
