Former Tampa City Council member Harry Cohen is the far-and-away leader in fundraising for the Hillsborough County Commission District 1 race.

Cohen has spent more on his campaign than any other candidate has raised.

As of June 26, Cohen had raised $126,718 and spent just over $49,000. He has more than $77,000 on hand for the race.

His opponent in the Democratic primary, Jen McDonald, is in second with $48,517 raised. Of that, she retains nearly $26,000 on hand.

Two Republicans are running in the GOP primary for the seat, which is opening because incumbent Sandy Murman is term-limited out of office.

Tony Morejon leads the GOP race with $44,255 raised as of June 26, the most recent date for which data is available. He has more than $24,000 left on hand after spending nearly $20,000 on the race so far.

Scott Levinson has raised just $12,753 and has less than $2,000 on hand.

Democrats are hoping to pick up the seat in November in a purple district that has been leaning more and more to the left in recent years.

Cohen is taping deep-pockets in his bid, bringing in three top dollar contributions from TECO, M1 Capital Investments and G1 Capital Investments in the latest report covering June 13-26. Three of the eight contributions he collected were for maximum amounts, $1,000.

McDonald had a slow month, bringing in just $175 in the latest period. She hasn’t reached $1,000 on a report since April when she raised about $1,600.

McDonald, a South Tampa business leader, had her best month in February, before coronavirus crippled traditional fundraising activity, with more than $14,000 raised.

Morejon raised $5,500 in the latest reporting period with 20 individual contributions averaging $275 each.

Levinson didn’t raise a dime during the latest reporting period.
