Poll: Ron DeSantis approval rating sags as COVID-19 rages

DeSantis is now underwater with 49% of voters; only 44% approve of his job performance.

The latest surge of COVID-19 might be catching up with Gov. Ron DeSantis.

A new poll from St. Pete Polls finds the Governor’s approval rating has sagged considerably, with more Floridians now saying they do not approve of the job DeSantis is doing than those who say they approve.

The poll, which was conducted Monday and Tuesday among 3,952 likely Florida voters through an automated phone polling system, also found DeSantis falling behind one Democratic rival for the 2022 gubernatorial election, trailing Democratic U.S. Rep. Charlie Crist. DeSantis has a slight lead on Democratic Florida Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried in the poll.

The poll also shows Floridians are not in agreement with DeSantis when it comes to his opposition to mask mandates for school children.

DeSantis drew just 44% of Florida voters saying they approve of the job he is doing, while 49% said they do not approve of his job performance. The rest were unsure.

That is a huge swing from the job approval numbers DeSantis received in a Florida Chamber of Commerce poll in May. That  survey gave him a 55% approval for his job performance, with 40% not approving.

In the St. Pete Polls survey, DeSantis nearly broke even among partisan voters, with Republicans not quite overcoming the Democrats’ opinions.

For Democrats, 74% said they do not approve of his job performance and 19% said they do. For Republicans, 71% said they approve, while 22% said they do not.

Independent voters broke against him, with 39% saying they approve of his job performance, and 51% saying they do not approve.

DeSantis received positive marks from White, non-Hispanic voters, with 51% approving and 43% not approving. But he was underwater among Hispanic voters, among Asian or Pacific Islander voters, and especially among Black voters.

His job performance drew negative results among both men, a 44% to 49% split; and women, with a 44% to 48% split.

He also is not doing well within any age category except voters age 70 or older. The youngest set, those ages 18-29, posted 39% approval and 52% disapproval. The next youngest, those age 30-49, were not far off, with 40% approving and 51% disapproving. Those over 70 showed 49% approval, still not a majority, but more than the 43% who said no, they do not approve.

DeSantis still is viewed favorably in North Florida markets from Pensacola to Jacksonville, and is holding his own in Tampa and Fort Myers. Panama City voters gave him 71% approval against 20% disapproval. Tampa barely broke his way, with 48% saying they approve and 46% saying they don’t.

But the Governor is underwater in Orlando, Gainesville, West Palm Beach and Miami. In Orlando, 44% said they approve of his job performance, while 48% said they do not. In Miami, just 31% of voters said they approve, while 61% said they do not.

The St. Pete Polls survey also gives President Joe Biden a slight positive nod, with Florida voters favoring him at 49%, as 46% gave the President poor marks.

The survey’s unusually large sample size gives it a margin of error of 1.6%, meaning the key findings are falling outside the margin.

St. Pete Polls are aggregated by two of the nation’s leading polling watchdogs, Real Clear Politics and Five Thirty Eight.

It seems that our low life Governor has placed his personal political goals well ahead of that of Florida’s children. He was on camera recently saying, “I just want to see my children smiling and being happy.” Well, he should tell his kid’s Undertaker that. That way during the viewing, his kid will have smiles on their faces while laying in their coffins. Perhaps the Undertaker can give them some pieces of candy and a toy too, so they’ll appear to be happy.

Personally, I don’t care if the kids are happy or not. Our nation is in a major health crisis that could’ve been over by now if not for the idiots that refuse to get shots. I wonder how many people without vaccinations have to die before they realize that those that have been vaccinated are staying around to continue living their lives. Apparently they trust COVID more than the vaccine. I certainly wouldn’t. The number of viruses that have ravaged and decimated populations throughout our planet’s history is frightening. It was vaccines that stopped the continued carnage. Bubonic Plague anyone? Whopping Cough? How about the Mumps? Or Chicken Pox? Anyone looking forward to getting Small Pox? Too bad, because vaccines wiped it completely out. But if you’re tired of running, there’s still places where Polio is still paralyzing people. Vaccines couldn’t possibly be more important. 600,000+ Americans have died from this disease. When will it be enough?

Wow, you guys really haven’t looked at the stats per age group, have you? Covid is MUCH less dangerous than the regular flu for children. Learn some facts.

I am VERY concerned about children NOT wearing masks at school. My 3 oldest grandchildren are vaccinated but my youngest one is not eligible. I live with them and I am immuo-compromised. Our family always wears masks when we go out. DeSantis is full of crap and interested in his own political agenda. He has no idea what he is talking about re: Covid 19; or he does and is ignoring the science because it’s not convenient for him. His “no mandates” is utterly ridiculous. What an idot we have for a governor.

Are you against the polio vaccine because it does not usually kill people?

I just saw a story on TV where a teengirl ended up on a respirator and hospitalized in intensive care due to COVID. NO she did not die…but NO one knows what this girls health issues may remain for the rest of her life.

Help me understand something: if you are doing all the “right things” on your mind, then why do you think the government should obligate everyone to think the same way? What are you so afraid of if you are “protecting” you and your family?
It is in the human nature to agree to disagree. The governor is allowing parents to educate themselves and make their own decisions. I respect a government who allow me to make educated choices on how to protect my own family. T

  • Young person

    August 3, 2021 at 8:04 pm

I find it somewhat amusing that young people (ie my generation) are so relatively opposed to DeSantis. They’ve been the biggest victims by far of overly severe COVID restrictions. Healthy children and young people benefit the least from lockdowns and school closures since they’re not at significant risk. But they also suffer the most from restrictions since they go out the most, benefit from in person school and are the least established in their careers.

Of course my peers are also generally stupid and irrational so i hope we get precisely what we want. As painfully as possible. I only sympathize for helpless school children at the mercy of their selfish teachers and hysterical school board officials.

      • nobody

        August 4, 2021 at 12:11 am

Ugh… Sorry, not sorry… You’re the one who needs help. You spoke down to the previous poster, dismissing him as a “kid”, glossed over all the points he made, and resorted to insults.. Very “mature” of you…

Week over week, the death rate AND the total number of deaths are in fact DOWN – significantly.

The total number of people infected has gone up, but as many in the medical field have predicted, this virus will come in waves. The fact is the delta variant is more contagious, but it is less lethal/severe (contrary to what the anecdotal stories many doctors who like to go on TV will claim).

Infections have gone up, and as a result hospitalizations have gone up. But the rate of hospitalizations has actually gone down (meaning of those who are infected, the percentage of those people now requiring hospitalization is less than it was previously).

Oh, and even the CDC had a document leak stating the vaccine does not stop the virus from being transmitted, but it does reduce the severity of the symptoms if you get infected.

So the point is, if you want a vaccine, go get it. It MIGHT reduce the severity of the symptoms that YOU experience… But forcing everyone else to get the vaccine doesn’t help you, it only helps the person receiving the vaccine. So in other words: My body my choice!

People have a right to make a choice about what they literally inject into their body. Not to mention that if these drug companies were so honest and confident in these vaccines, why are they opposed to having it FDA approved? Why are they more fearful of lawsuits related to vaccine side affects more so than other drugs they make? Because drug companies are so honest right? (hmm remember the pill pandemic they gave us a few years ago? You know, when everyone was doctor shopping for more oxy’s? I do.)

Point is, the virus is real. The virus is a risk. We live with risks day in and day out. We consider risk vs reward on a personal level and manage the risks as we deem appropriate. What we dont do is go into full meltdown mode.

We are tired of the sky is falling routine. Stop scaring yourselves into your basements. If it weren’t so alarming, it would be pathetic that the media can stoke this much fear into people… You’re being played.

I implore you to read the numbers, listen to some of the opposing views and then come to a conclusion – instead of dismissing someone’s statements only because it goes against your already made up mind.

In the end, Desantis isn’t just saving this state, he’s saving liberty. Thank god this man is in office.

Thank you for the intelligent take on the issue. DeSantis is Governor with common sense and logic! Covid mortality % ….very low. Many diseases and infections much worse. Also…masks do not block viruses. And…Viruses will continue to mutate! Apparently, too many will stay masked and distanced forever! What about the homeless , who live all together on the sidewalks…doorways….of San Francisco, Seattle, Portland, LA etc?! They have not all dropped dead….as ,if media tells us….is certain if we contract Covid! These homeless live in squalor…are not vaccinated….and crammed together! Our Governor believes in freedom! Each bit of any freedom lost will ensure huge freedoms gone forever! Follow the dots….And the $$$$……Fauci is the highest paid government employee.

        You sure?

I would wager its quite the opposite.
        600K deaths
        325M USA population
        1/(660000/325000000)=514.

You would have to know 514 people to know someone who has died from COVID. Last time I checked 3rd graders dont know 514 people.

Beside the government has no responsibility to ensure the personal health of its citizens by demanding they stay inside and wear face coverings.

        • Bad Math

          August 4, 2021 at 5:56 pm

This is some terrible math, to be fair. You don’t really have a grasp of sampling. As far as “knowing” people who’ve died, you should really only be sampling populations of age groups that are at risk. Why are you counting children, young adults? That’s almost akin to overcounting.

The math would be more like…

How likely are you to have a friend who has a grandparent/immuno-compromised adult relative die of covid. The odds are much higher. I personally don’t know a single person who DOESNT know someone who’s died of covid.

Emperor DeSantis does not care about people’s health. He does not care about Florida’s children. He does not care about Florida’s elderly, or anyone else you can think of. All he cares about are two things 1) his own personal beliefs and 2) his political future — and trying to “play God” to prove it. Well, he can’t “play God” when he can’t even “play Governor” properly.

    • Jerry

      August 4, 2021 at 1:33 pm

If you are worried, get the vaccine. If 99% of the people hospitalized are unvaccinated, then they don’t pose a risk to you. Let people make their own choice. Why is that a bad thing? Let people decide for themselves.

And what’s the obsession with making kids wear masks? Kids aren’t dying from COVID. The risk to children are statistically insignificant. And if parents and grandparents are vaccinated, what’s the risk????

All you liberals care about is control. You want control over everyone.

        August 6, 2021 at 1:36 pm

I get where you’re coming from. I really do. And I’d like to explain where I’m coming from, as someone who supports these mandates and people getting vaccines. All I ask is that when you read this, you can at least imagine that it is not my goal to control people.
The vaccines work well, against the strains of COVID that are currently the most prevalent. However, if the virus mutates enough, this is not necessarily going to continue being the case. Each time the virus replicates, it has a chance of picking up a mutations that makes it more resistant to the vaccine. When the virus infects someone who is not vaccinated, it is able to replicate much more than if it infects a vaccinated person (because our immune system kills it before it has a chance to). As result, unvaccinated people provide more opportunities to mutate in such a way that the vaccine will be less effective.
Beyond this, there are people that can’t get the vaccine for medical reasons (e.g. the drummer of Offspring). These people are directly being endangered by people who are not vaccinated or choose not to follow safety protocols.
So yes, I get that these lockdowns and mandates suck. I hate them too, I promise I do. I have been losing my mind being stuck inside. If the virus mutating in unvaccinated people was not a possibility, I would be much more comfortable with people making their own choices in this regard. But that is a concern. And we have never had the freedom to knowingly put other people in fatal danger in this country. Drunk driving is illegal because it has the potential to hurt people other than ourselves. And I believe that the same principle applies here.

Thanks for your post!!! Well stated and I agree with you
100 %. I hope some others will change their tunes and agree as well. This variant is frightening. So many lives have been lost and now we have to think of innocent children being at risk when the schools reopen. Some people are blind or ignorant to the Scientific facts! Ron Desantis only cares about himself. That has been proven over and over again.

St. Pete Polls you say? Is this the same St. Pete Polls that did four state-wide polls during the 2020 elections, all of which incorrectly predicted a Biden win? Im not a betting man, but if I were…

  • Robert Sutton

    August 4, 2021 at 2:37 am

President Biden won the election fair and square, thanks to the 80+ MILLION Americans who legitimately and legally voted for him.
DeSantis’ efforts to emulate trump and downplay the seriousness of the coronavirus could easily backfire on him.

OK, now we have a horse race instead of a coronation, and that’s good for all Floridians. It might mean we’ll have more responsive government for awhile, fewer a–kissing editorials by Mr. Patronis and other GOP suck ups supporting bad public policy on masks in schools. Weeks ago Patronis and Desantis both showed down at Surfside what leadership is all about. More of that, please, and less playing to the Fox crowd. Unless you want to lose.

The governor’s poll ratings are plummeting because he is speaking only to his base, the right wing anti-vax Cult of the Ex-president. It’s the same playbook. He would willingly pander to the angry, misinformed, selfish mob that he is now trying to claim as his own sordid constituency of misfits and self-entitled hatemongers.

The hospitals are filling up with young people and depleting the resources of the medical community. This governor could care less about anyone but himself. Every newspaper in the state has denounced the governor’s lack of decency and support for the majority of Floridians, who, he knows, will never vote for him. His heartless decisions and arrogance are being covered nationally and around the world. His jacked-up ego and lust for power are as obvious as cologne on a skunk. His wretched legacy follows him everywhere he goes.

Children and schools are the hope for a better future but our governor is a dinosaur. His edicts are purely political and reflect his twisted, secret obligation to Yale’s Skull and Crossbones society, to continue to decimate the population and its freedom in any way possible, to create fear and tear down the institutions of American civilization to serve the plans of a few self-anointed arbiters of their authoritarian vision.

The only way this governor will win another election will be to cheat. Right out of the playbook of his demented idol, the loser Ex-president.

DeSantis is doing a great job with all things considered. While the more at risk population does have points about there not being mask mandates in place, masks are not a end all for the virus. Also with any virus they will constantly mutate. I am only speaking from my own personal lens but I have a small child who will be starting pre school this year. She is almost three and a good portion of her developmental learning has taken place during the pandemic. There are things that many children are missing out on and need to have a healthy and developing mind that they are not getting with the mandates, ect. To each is own but Desantis is giving you the choice to do and govern your OWN life how you see fit. I was wearing a mask this entire time and was on the fence on a vaccine (until i was confident about getting one)then, being pregnant i was told if you test positive at the hospital then your spouse could not be there for the birth of the child. While i disapproved but understood the regulation I think had to re think what was best for MY family and got a vaccine. Every person has the ability to do what they think is best for them and the governor has little to do with the personal choices you make. He is ensuring florida has a continually generated income and while NOW it is a hot button topic just like the previous strain this will peak then fall and another will mutate and come about, thats nature. get upset all you want about it but facts dont care about your feelings.

If 99% of those hospitalized are unvaccinated which Biden keeps claiming, then the vaccinated have nothing to worry about. Let people make their own decision.

There is a reason I live in Florida and got the hell out of New York. That state has mandates and vax passes and a governor that gropes women. Don’t bring that liberal garbage down here!

St Pete poll is a liberal garbage poll anyway. It predicted Biden to win in 2020 and predicted Gillum to win in 2018. Polling in Florida is skewed in favor of Dems every time because the media here is terrible and liberal biased.

    • Bibi Samson

      August 6, 2021 at 2:54 pm

      …and a former President that gropes women…
BTW last time I looked the Florida legislature is Republican and the last several Governors as well. It’s amazing that the capital of the state with it’s surrounding areas don’t vote that way. What do they know that the rest of the state doesn’t?

The blatant hubris and stupidity of DeSantis is a direct reflection of his desire to be Trump’s successor. He like Trump who had total disdain for the public, is pursuing a course that will result in his being turned out of office eventually and disgraced. He like his mentor will suffer the same. It is time for Florida to track a new course, perhaps it will take the State to plummet further into chaos brought on by the Delta Corona Virus before he is recalled from office. Good luck Floridians, take your State back. Send him and Trump packing to another refuge. I would suggest Alabama or Mississippi, or Texas.

I think DeSantis is just plain selfish and evil. He is the worst governor I recall this state ever having, even worse than Scott and I thought he was horrific. I don’t know know why Floridians keep voting against their own better interests and keep putting these bully’s and American Nazis in office. I’m sure he’ll be re-elected because this state only likes to elect criminals and the worst this state has to offer.

It’s only beginning.

Funny they only poll people with land lines. I know about a hundred people who didn’t get polled. They know a hundred more. Polls like this are garbage. Either to discourage you or instill false hope. Typical political gaslighting and dems love those sweet sweet lies. you’re perpetual whiners and victims of your own stupidity, refuse to accept responsibility or consequences. Basically, your IQ is less than that of a farmyard animal with JUST enough basic instinct to eat and drink and find shelter from rain. Politicians love that stuff.

    Listen….
1, HAZMAT certified….. the masks don’t work. Do you see people wearing those wimpy face panties while caring for ebola patients?
2, The border is opened wider than a certain VP’s pie hole…. they are not forcing vaccines… DUH of course cases went up. Just DUH!! Duh all around!! And here’s a DERP for good measure!!
3, No one wore masks during the regular flu until covid. You are all hypocrites in that regard.
4, This is the zombie invasion. Corpses would be easy to defeat. instead we have cowards with the power to vote that are ruining lives, sinking businesses and dismantling the future.
5, Covid is the virus of the glutton… you never took care of your body, the most exercise you get is buying groceries that are full of toxins and sugars that further kill your immune system and shorten your lifespan. You smoke, drink, over eat, and screw around… you were going to die of the regular flu, cancer, heart failure, or a stroke anyway. In fact, most people did…. but CDC says Covid did it and you believed it.

This is not the governor’s fault. it’s yours. but you’re a democrat and incapable of logic. Nevermind science. You don’t even know what that is…it just makes you feel smart to say it.

The good thing about Covid – yes there is good in ever bad situation-
1, it revealed the hypochondriacs and hypocrites along with the gullible, easily manipulated AND those who love to manipulate others. You’re a bunch of hall monitoring tattle tales who speak with forked tongues. One minute dems are complaining about global warming and over population, and the next they’re screaming in terror that people are dying…. which way do you want it?!?! do you want population to go down or not??? Oh wait… you don’t want to be on the list … because you’re part of the population. oops. yeah well nature doesn’t really care about your high and mighty ideology.
2, it revealed the absolute stunning ignorance and brainwashing going on in schools and encouraged THOUSANDS to home school. That might actually save our country after all!
3, Every time i see one of your precious masks laying on the ground i just laugh at your hypocrisy. you are the REAL narcissists. just look at your actions. Except narcs hate it when someone holds the mirror up to them… You are doing everything you accuse the governor of doing. in short, you make me sick. YOU are more dangerous than covid and ebola combined because you crush hopes and dreams of good people. and you like it.
4, it revealed these so called faithful christians never actually read their bible…. and you are right there beside the atheists and nihilists. you ALL live in perpetual fear of death. probably because you’re afraid of answering to a higher power. if it weren’t so you wouldn’t be behaving this way.
The dems have you locked in blind fear and you believe everything they say, believing they actually care about YOU, when the truth is they’re using you to get richer and more powerful.
5, clearly no one has read the Gulag Archipelago if you had you wouldn’t be so quick to mask up and get a mystery shot. YIKES!!!!

Final point…. Life is suffering. Your delusion is thinking you will stop death in its tracks. The only hope this world has is a great big meteor crashing into the Caldera. It can’t happen soon enough.

My major concern is our governor’s decision making. He seems to make his decisions based purely on the political value to him regardless of the truth or seriousness of the matter. He denied that the millions of gallons of phosphate mining waste could influence red tide. He provided vaccinations to his supporters before health care front line workers. He has signed into law legislation making it illegal to offer water to voters standing in line to vote now that mail in voting has been restricted. Those are just a few examples of his misguided decision making. He does not deserve to be re-elected.

  • Rick

    August 12, 2021 at 10:10 pm

So when the majority of republicans who refuse to be vaccinated and die from the virus, it will be a cakewalk for the Democratic Party during elections to control the House, Senate, and Presidency for years to come. Thank you Trump and DeSantis for killing people. Unfortunately our children are the ones who will suffer because of DeSantis major brain fart.

  • Mohan

    August 13, 2021 at 12:58 am

No matter what the outcome of the governor’s race next year, DeSantis is definitely going to be on the GOP presidential contenders and believe it or not he may even win.
Unless the Democrats learn to communicate that they are the ones fought and got the virus relief and trying to being the pandemic to an end. Otherwise, GOP will simply manipulate the truth and bring back the GOP majority in 2022 and win the presidency 2024.
Joe Manchin and Krysten Sinema are two key players and how they behave between now and 2022. They will decide if democracy survives in America.

  • Gary

    August 14, 2021 at 6:21 pm

DeSantis needs to be reminded that his supporters are armed. A lot of them heavily. They trust him. They believe him. When their child dies…he just might find out they aren’t just fine with their child becoming a statistic for his presidential ambitions.
