NextEra Energy, the Juno Beach-based clean energy company and owner of Florida Power & Light, has joined the fight for fair, equitable and competitive workplaces throughout the state.

Florida Businesses for a Competitive Workforce announced the addition of NextEra in its campaign for passage of House Bill 33 and Senate Bill 156, known as the Florida Competitive Workforce Act. The act seeks to institute nondiscrimination protections for gay, lesbian and transgendered Floridians.

NextEra, through its FP&L subsidiary, services 4.4 million customers in Florida. It is now part of a coalition of 22 major employers that support statewide protections as sound business strategy to attract the most talented workforce to the Sunshine State.

“By leading respectfully, promoting teamwork, building a diverse and inclusive team, and investing in development, we strengthen and engage our greatest asset — our people,” said Deb Caplan, NextEra Energy executive vice president of Human Resources and Corporate Services.

Currently, 28 municipalities protect more than half of all Florida residents from discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Florida Businesses for a Competitive Workforce supports passing such protections statewide as a sound business strategy to draw the best and the brightest workforce to the state.

Leading the coalition is Patrick Geraghty, chairman of the board of directors and CEO of Florida Blue in Jacksonville.

Other leadership includes Secretary John Tonnison, who is executive vice president and worldwide CIO of Tech Data Corp. in Clearwater; and Treasurer Philip Dinkins, senior vice president of commercial real estate firm DTZ Investment Holdings.

In addition to NextEra, the coalition includes many of Florida’s biggest employers: AmericanAirlines Arena, Bilzin Sumberg, C1Bank, Carlton Fields Jorden Burt, Carnival Corporation, CSX, Darden, Florida Blue, the Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association, Haskell, HSN, Marriott, the Miami HEAT, On Top of the World Communities, Raymond James, St. Petersburg Chamber of Commerce, Tech Data, the University of North Florida, Walt Disney World Resorts, Wells Fargo and Winn Dixie.
