Sheyla Asencios has been hired as the Florida Democratic Party’s deputy political director in charge of Hispanic outreach, the party said Wednesday.
She replaces the departing Jeff Branch, who was in a similar capacity until this month but primarily working on outreach to African-American communities. Branch was tapped to be political director of U.S. Rep. Patrick Murphy’s campaign for U.S. Senate.
“We absolutely are thrilled to have Sheyla join our team,” state party chair Allison Tant said in a prepared statement. “Sheyla was a tremendous asset last cycle, and I look forward to her continued efforts energizing and empowering communities across Florida to help deliver victories to Democrats up and down the ballot.”
“I’m honored and excited to be rejoining Chair Tant’s team as we head into such a crucial election cycle,” said Asencios in a news release. “I look forward to helping lead our Party’s outreach efforts to our state’s underrepresented communities, as well as working alongside our Democratic elected officials and grassroots to keep Florida blue in 2016.”
The 29 year-old Asencios comes to the new position by way of the campaigns of former Gov. Charlie Crist and lieutenant governor candidate Annette Taddeo, who is running for Congress this year. She ran Hispanic-oriented voter outreach and media relation operations for the Democrats at both posts.
Asencios will work with the party from its satellite office in Miami.
