Meet Taylor Nix Hatch, one of the “30 Under 30” rising stars of Florida politics

30 under 30 - taylor nix hatch

Friends say Taylor Nix Hatch personifies enthusiasm, which isn’t surprising since she was a cheerleader at Florida State University.

The 28-year-old now is Director of Legislative Affairs, or top in-house lobbyist, for the Department of Management Services, the state’s real estate manager.

Before that, she was the Deputy Legislative Affairs Director at the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity.

And before joining the state, Hatch “worked for a private firm where she consulted with a variety of Fortune 500 clients, directly providing counsel on appropriation and public policy issues,” her official bio says.

Her FSU degree is in consumer textile and merchandising, with minors in communications and business. She and her husband, Eddie, live in Tallahassee.

Here’s Hatch in her own words:

I am … barely 28, but I will cling to it.

I live in … Tallahassee.

I got into politics … completely by mistake but God knew what he was doing! I quickly found common ground with my love for the State of Florida, the advocacy, passion, quick pace and great handbags and shoes witnessed around spring time.

One principle I always put above politics is … Just one?! My character.

Person or people who gave me my first shot … Two incredible people, retired Senate Sergeant at Arms Donald Severance and lobbyist Guy Spearman. Sgt. Severance gave me my first job in politics working in the Senate Sergeant’s office. I am forever grateful for his kindness and taking me under his wing. Guy Spearman for pushing me to be better and providing me opportunities that I didn’t deserve.

I’ve already worked for/on (campaign, issues, etc.) … I have had the opportunity to work on a variety of client issues from Fortune 500 companies to pro bono causes. I have learned a great deal working on numerous House, Senate and Cabinet campaigns. More recently I have had the honor of working for multiple Governors’ agencies advocating for policies that make Florida #1. I am so appreciative to the leaders and individuals who continue to mold me along the way.

When I begin a project or first work on a campaign, I look for … coffee first. Followed by a strong team, you’re only as good as the people around you. And coffee.

I’ve been blessed to have these people as my mentors … From the beginning my parents, Tommy and Becky Nix. They set an example through their actions of the qualities that I want to possess. Throughout my career, there are many professionals that have taken the time to invest in me. To name a few: Lauren Overton, Guy Spearman, Nancy Stewart, Bill Wilson and Chad Poppell, thank you.

The people I most admire in politics are … people who are honest, loyal and work hard. Former Senator and now Florida State University President John Thrasher is someone who embodies those qualities and many more. He is a man of integrity that enters into situations with thoughtfulness and grace but also with fight.

One lesson I’ve already learned is … trust your gut.

If I wasn’t working in politics, I’d be working in … fashion merchandising, the business side of fashion. I can’t draw a stick figure but I love the statement that can be made by the wardrobe a person selects.

In 10 years, you’ll read about me … still loving life with my best friend and husband, Eddie.
