With weeks to go until his retirement, Collier County Property Appraiser Abe Skinner has died.
The Property Appraiser’s Office announced the constitutional officer’s death.
“Mr. Skinner, a beloved leader, mentor, and public servant, dedicated his life to serving the people of Collier County, leaving behind an unparalleled legacy of professionalism and commitment to the community,” reads an announcement confirming the death.
Skinner has worked for the Property Appraiser’s Office since 1962 and was elected as Property Appraiser himself in 1991. He last ran for re-election in 2020, when he won an open Republican Primary with almost 79% of the vote.
He did not seek re-election this year. Vickie Downs, Skinner’s Chief Deputy Property Appraiser, won this year’s election to succeed Skinner, narrowly defeating Jim Molenaar in a Republican Primary in August.
“We are heartbroken by this devastating loss,” Downs said of Skinner’s death. “Abe was not just a colleague; he was a cornerstone of this office and a trusted friend. His vision, dedication, and kindness touched countless lives, and his impact will be felt for generations.”
Other leaders in the region praised Skinner as well.
U.S. Sen. Rick Scott, who lives in Naples, posted about the Property Appraiser’s death on social media.
“Abe Skinner served Collier County as Property Appraiser for over 30 years, where he was known for his commitment to his community,” the Republican former Governor said.
“Over the years, I got to know Abe and have always appreciated his kindness to everyone he met. Ann and I are praying for his family and all who knew him in Collier County.”
Local lawmakers also mourned Skinner’s death.
“I am deeply saddened to learn about the passing of Mr. Abe Skinner, our Collier County’s longtime Property Appraiser and resident of Naples,” state Rep. Lauren Melo, a Naples Republican, posted on social media. “My family and I had the privilege of knowing Mr. Skinner as a devoted public servant and an exceptional community leader. His contributions and dedication will be remembered fondly. My heartfelt condolences go out to Mr. Skinner’s family during this difficult time. You will be missed by many in Southwest Florida and beyond, Mr. Skinner.”
Gov. Ron DeSantis may appoint a replacement to serve the final weeks of Skinner’s term.
