Citrus County is mourning the death of a beloved Sheriff’s deputy whose struggle for recovery following a devastating accident galvanized the community.
Deputy Andy Lahera, critically injured while directing traffic following the Lecanto High School graduation ceremonies in May 2023, died Thursday morning.
The Citrus County Sheriff’s Office announced Lahera’s passing.
“Deputy Lahera’s life was defined by his steadfast dedication to the safety and well-being of Citrus County, and his absence leaves a profound void in the hearts of all who knew him,” the announcement says.
“Deputy Lahera dedicated 14 years of his life to protecting and uplifting the Citrus County community. From his earliest days on patrol to his most recent role as a School Resource Officer from 2018 to 2023, Andy was a dependable presence in the lives of countless students, families, and colleagues. His commitment to public safety was matched only by his deep care for the people he served.”
Lahera’s accident had a profound and lasting impact in Citrus County.
On the anniversary of his death, Andy’s wife, Michelle, penned a guest column in the Citrus County Chronicle deeply critical of then-Sheriff Mike Prendergast’s handling of her husband’s case.
The community reacted first with outrage, then jumped into action. Through a barbecue, it raised over $100,000 to cover the family’s mortgage.
Voters in 2024 removed Prendergast and elected David Vincent as Sheriff. Vincent, who regularly keeps in close contact with the Lahera family, was with Michelle on Thursday morning.
“Andy fought courageously, and this is a tremendous loss for his family, our agency, and this community,” Vincent said. “His heart for this community was unmatched, and his devotion to Michelle, Vincent, and Nicholas was the foundation of everything he did. We’ve lost a true hero and fighter. We will honor Andy’s legacy by standing beside his family, just as he always stood behind ours.”
Lahera’s plight also drew the attention of the Legislature, which unanimously passed the Deputy Andy Lahera Act. The law helps cover medical benefits for law enforcement officers who are critically injured on the job.
The Sheriff’s Office invited citizens to line Citrus County late Thursday afternoon for the procession carrying Lahera’s body.
Deputy Lahera is survived by his wife, Michelle, and their two sons, Vincent and Nicholas.
