The ride-hailing service Lyft says it will also cease operations in Broward County.
Competitor Uber announced its plans to leave Broward County on July 31 after Broward County Commission approved new laws regulating transportation network companies. Both services will continue operations in Palm Beach and Miami-Dade counties.
Lyft spokeswoman Chelsea Wilson told the South Florida Sun Sentinel the county’s new law “places unnecessarily burdensome requirements on drivers that make it nearly impossible for ride sharing to operate.” Many of the app-driven company’s drivers work during off time from other jobs.
Both companies say they conduct their own background checks on drivers.
Wilson says Lyft hopes commissioners will change the laws to better suit ride-hailing companies when they return from break on Aug. 11.
