Kristin Jacobs files for re-election in HD 96

Freshman Democratic Rep. Kristin Jacobs filed paperwork to run for re-election in House District 96 Tuesday, making her the first and only candidate for the Broward County seat.

Jacobs is one of the final incumbent lawmakers to refile for 2016, though securing her second term should be a cinch. The Coconut Creek Democrat is unlikely to draw any in-party competition, and with the district’s heavy Democratic tilt, she doesn’t need to worry about a GOP threat, either.

The 2014 cycle saw Jacobs sail past former Rep. Steve Perman in the Democratic primary, winning by more than 50 points, and cruise through Election Day without any major party competition.

The only other candidate in November was a write-in who siphoned off 59 of the nearly 30,000 votes cast in the election to replace outgoing Rep. Jim Waldman.

The Southwestern College alumna also proved to be a prolific fundraiser last cycle, pulling together $232,000 for her campaign. Those skills, along with the experience and exposure she got from her time as an elected member of the Broward County Commission, should keep her safely in the House, though she could set her sights on a higher office.
