Florida Democrats are launching a first-ever partnership with progressive activist group Ruth’s List to prepare the next generation of women seeking elected office.

The Florida Democratic Party House and Senate Victory committee announced the yearlong collaboration with Ruth’s List Florida — the state’s largest resource for Democratic women – which include a series of political retreats for prospective candidates.

Nearly 20 candidates recruited to run for office in competitive districts across Florida attended the inaugural two-day training session this weekend. On hand were several national and state-based political experts to coach the class on winning strategies for campaign finance, fundraising, field, digital outreach and communications.

“Florida families understand that a higher minimum wage, good-paying jobs, expanding Medicaid and respecting women’s rights are core issues that will improve the lives of all Floridians,” said Marley Wilkes, Ruth’s List Florida Executive Director. “Republicans in the state legislature continue to fail Florida families and Ruth’s List Florida and FDP House and Senate Victory intend to hold them accountable.

“Together, we have recruited an amazing class of candidates and together we intend to provide them the resources they need to win for Florida,” Wilkes added.

This event was the first in a move by Democrats towards breaking the Florida House Super Majority in 2016, and growing the Senate Democratic Caucus.

“We are excited to have recruited such a strong group of candidates as we head into 2016,” said FDP Executive Director Scott Arceneaux. “As we’ve seen time and time again this year, House and Senate Republicans have brought D.C.-style dysfunction to Tallahassee and remain mired in gridlock.

“Floridians deserve better,” he added.
