Redistricting chairs agree to go back to House-approved map
State Sen. Bill Galvano

The Legislature’s two redistricting chairs hastily agreed Thursday on a map the House passed earlier this week as the one lawmakers should adopt to redraw the state’s Senate districts.

It’s the same map that senators already had rejected to force this week’s conference process between House chair Jose Oliva and his Senate counterpart, Bill Galvano.

In a one-and-a-half-minute long meeting, the two concurred on the House map.

That map was passed by a vote of 73-47, with all Democrats in opposition and some Republicans joining them. It includes Hispanic-majority South Florida seats that have caused friction all week.

The Senate’s own map barely made it out of its own chamber on a vote of 22-18, with all 14 Democrats and four Republicans opposed.

Sen. Miguel Diaz de la Portilla, a Miami-Dade Republican, has said he won’t support the House map, leading to questions over how Galvano can believe he has the votes to get the Senate to pass the House map.

The Senate is scheduled to go back into session at 4 p.m. Thursday.
