The 60 Plus Association awarded its Guardian of Seniors Rights award to Sarasota U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan at a ceremony in Tampa.

The conservative-leaning seniors advocacy group gives the award to public officials who advance “positions in support of seniors, including his stance as a vocal leader on the need for tax reform to create jobs and stimulate the economy.”

The award came during an event hosted by the Main Street Growth and Opportunity Coalition affiliated where Buchanan gave the keynote address.

Buchanan, a Sarasota Republican who has represented the region in Congress for five terms, chairs the House Human Resources Subcommittee and sits on the Budget Committee.

“This event, and this award for Congressman Buchanan, signal to Congress that the time has come for bi-partisan tax reform that will help businesses and the economy grow,” said  National Field Director for 60 Plus Apryl Marie Fogel. “The Coalition and its members from across Florida are hopeful that Congressman Buchanan’s colleagues will join him in getting to work on tax reform this year.”

Fogel praised Buchanan for his work on seniors’ issues on the occasion of the award.

“There are many challenges facing seniors today, and the challenge of economic uncertainty caused by our out-of-date tax policies grows more daunting each day,” said Fogel. “Our seniors have worked hard to create and preserve the America we know today and we have a responsibility to pass on a nation full of opportunities to the generations ahead.

“60 Plus is honored to be able to recognize policymakers like Congressman Buchanan who have diligently promoted comprehensive tax reform to strengthen the economy, create more jobs, and reduce the tax burden on seniors,” Fogel continued. “Our nation’s tax code has not seen a substantial overhaul in nearly 30 years and to some, substantive tax reform and all of the benefits that would surely follow seem like far-off dreams. But with committed leaders like Congressman Holding, there is reason to believe that meaningful tax reform is within reach before 2016.

“We thank Congressman Buchanan for his work for seniors and hope that his colleagues in Washington will follow his lead and work on substantive tax reform this year.”
