Don’t expect major education bills in 2016, John Legg says

There won’t be any major education bills expected in the 2016 Legislative Session, according to Senate Education chair John Legg.

As reported by LobbyTools, testing legislation was one of only a handful of substantive bills that ultimately passed in the 2015 session. And for the upcoming session, set to begin next month, Legg said education does not seem to be gaining any traction.

“I am talking to fellow senators, and they are not talking about their priorities in education,” he told the Tampa Bay Times. “They are not advocating for big changes this year.”

Although the lion’s share of attention is expected to go to issues such as health care, water policy and the new Seminole Compact, there may be a few education issues addressed in 2016.

In the first week of session, LobbyTools notes that Legg’s committee is set to hear a bill on the Best and Brightest teacher bonus, after being pulled to go through a policy review. Also, rules governing high school sports, class size and vouchers could also be on the agenda.
