Patrick Murphy fundraises off Mitch McConnell’s “blatant political obstruction” after Antonin Scalia’s death

The Senate campaign for U.S. Rep. Patrick Murphy has blasted out an email to supporters asking for donations in the wake of the political jockeying after the passing of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia.

“Nobody wants to rush to politicize the passing of a public servant, but unfortunately Mitch McConnell couldn’t help himself,” reads the missive from Friends of Patrick Murphy.

“In an unprecedented move, McConnell is already promising to obstruct the constitutional process and President Obama’s next Supreme Court nominee. It is a complete — and disgraceful — abdication of his constitutional responsibility. It has never been more clear that we need to win back the Senate so that Republicans like Mitch McConnell can’t continue to play petty politics with the most important aspects of our democracy.

“The fate of the Senate lies with this Florida race. We need to grab this momentum and use it to make sure we can win back the Senate and end this obstruction madness. That means 5,000 signatures in the next 24 hours. Will you step up?

The fundraising e-blast comes on the heels of Murphy’s Valentine’s Day charge that that his primary opponent, U.S. Rep. Alan Grayson, has serious problems with criticism and ethics investigations of his handling of private hedge funds. Murphy said Grayson should close the funds immediately, consider leaving the U.S. Senate race, and even resign his seat in Congress if any of the ethics violation allegations stick.
