Marc Caputo, arguably the best political reporter in Florida, is leaving the Miami Herald to go work for Politico.
That news came this morning via Politico’s Mike Allen in his Playbook column.
Quoting from an email from editor Susan Glasser, Caputo will write a daily Florida Playbook, “as well as leveraging his unique knowledge and contacts to help us cover former Gov. Jeb Bush, U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, and the politics of one of the country’s key swing states….”
A native of Key West, Caputo has been with the Herald since 2003. He attended the University of Miami, and previously worked for newspapers in Key West, Naples, Arizona, and West Palm Beach.
It’s another huge pickup for Politico, which only grows larger and more dominant. Late last year the D.C.- based political website hired Tampa Bay Times feature writer Michael Kruse and editor Bill Duryea from the Tampa Bay Times. And last week they hired Jack Shafer to cover media and politics, after previous stints at Reuters and Slate.
Caputo is the son of novelist and journalist Philip Caputo, the author of 15 books, including his acclaimed memoir of Vietnam, A Rumor of War.
