Add Carlos Beruff to the list of candidates who have the backing of a super PAC.
Jeremy Wallace with the Tampa Bay Times reported that a super PAC formed just days after Beruff got in the U.S. Senate race support his bid. The committee — called Lets Clean Up Washington — was established on March 1.
According to federal campaign finance reports, the committee is based out of Tallahassee. The committee raised no money during the first quarter of 2016.
In February, Beruff announced he was running for the U.S. Senate. The 58-year-old Bradenton homebuilder has never run for office, but has served on several appointed boards, including the Southwest Florida Water Management District and the State College of Florida Board of Trustees. He also served as the chair of Commission on Healthcare and Hospital Funding.
Super PACs can’t coordinate with candidates. The group can raise and spend unlimited amounts to advocate for a candidate or against his opponents.
According to the Tampa Bay Times, four of the five Republicans — Ron DeSantis, David Jolly, Carlos Lopez-Cantera and Beruff — running for the U.S. Senate have super PACs support them. Todd Wilcox does not have one, according to the Tampa Bay Times.
