McKinley Lewis is in the rare position of being the head communicator for an entire state agency — the Department of Corrections.
Just a few years ago, he was working as an intern for the Tallahassee-based public relations firm Core Message.
Here’s Lewis in his own words.
I am (age) … 24.
I live in … Tallahassee.
I got into politics because … I love the process. Working for the people of Florida has been a truly rewarding experience and the dynamic nature of government makes it fun.
One principle I always put above politics is … honesty. Life is made much more difficult by a lack of trust.
Person or people who gave me my first shot … There are quite a few people who have helped me along the way. The Core Message team I worked with in 2013 taught me to love this work and gave me a few important lessons that I’ll never forget.
I’ve already worked for/on (campaign, issues, etc.) … more than I ever imagined I would at this point. Everything from the public health to criminal justice reform.
When I begin a project or first work on a campaign, I look for … the big picture. Taking a step back from something and realizing the larger impact can greatly advance your understanding of the issues.
I’ve been blessed to have these people as my mentors … my parents. They provide the guidance, support and encouragement to keep me going and a reality check when I need it.
The people I most admire in politics are … those who stand up for what they believe in, even when it’s not the most popular thing to do.
One lesson I’ve already learned is … everything is quotable. Speak with purpose or don’t speak at all.
If I wasn’t working in politics, I’d be … probably in the private sector and hopefully doing something creative and meaningful.
In 10 years, you’ll read about me … building my own firm … maybe running for office. Anything is possible!
