Tampa Bay Times staff writer Ivan Penn is leaving St. Petersburg for California, to take a position as energy reporter for the Los Angeles Times.

Penn said he would make the move this summer. The Washington, D.C., native has reported on utilities and energy issues at the Times since July 2006. Prior to that, he worked at The Baltimore Sun for 12 years.

Penn’s beat, as part of the Times’ business team, was covering utilities, energy and consumer issues. He is married and has three children.

Penn made the announcement in a Facebook post:

This one is bitter-sweet: this summer I will leave Florida’s largest and best newspaper, the Tampa Bay Times, and St. Petersburg, FL. It’s been a nine-year run working with some of the finest journalists and people of my 23-year career.

I will be joining the business staff of the Los Angeles Times as the paper’s energy reporter.

But every goodbye ain’t gone. September and I plan to return in 2016 to produce Sounds of the Civil Rights Movement: The Power of Song St. Petersburg.
