U.S. Rep. John Mica and other elected officials want to speed up the Interstate 4 expansion in the Orlando area.

The group on Monday set up a task force to explore how to speed up the interstate expansion plans. It will be led by Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs.

Expansion on Interstate 4 is beginning this year on a stretch of the highway from near Universal Studios to the suburb of Longwood. That expansion could take up to six years.

The next phase of the expansion is expected in eight years. That part of the expansion will go into Polk County to the west and Volusia County to the east.

Mica says that could cause transportation headaches for the next decade if expansion isn’t sped up.
