Jennifer Webb money pitch in HD 69 seemingly asks for more than allowed by law

Jennifer Webb, the Democrat facing incumbent Republican Kathleen Peters in House District 69, is admittedly a political novice. That could explain an interesting fundraising email she recently sent to supporters.

Webb’s money pitch contains one questionable detail: “Right now, we have a generous donor who is willing to match any donation before midnight tomorrow for up to $5,000.”

Ambitious a goal as that might be, it seems to stretch the limits of Florida law. According to Florida statutes, individuals, corporations and unions can contribute no more than $1,000 to any particular Senate or House candidate.

Though it is certainly nice to have such a generous donor, is not good to appear to be asking for more than is allowed by Florida law.

Again, it is likely an innocent rookie mistake. After all, Webb’s expertise is as director of community partnership at the University of South Florida; the HD 69 race would be her first campaign for public office.

Nevertheless, if Webb wants to play the game, it’s always a good idea to know the rules.
