Marco Rubio tells NBC News he thinks Donald Trump ‘is doing better in Florida than people think he’s doing’

Rubio Trump GOP debate 03.12

Don’t be so quick to put Florida in the “win” column for Hillary Clinton, says Sen. Marco Rubio.

Rubio told NBC News this week he thinks Trump “is doing better in Florida than people think he’s doing.” But, said Rubio, he doesn’t think Trump can win the presidency unless he wins the Sunshine State.

“You know, it’s going to be a very close race,” he said during an interview with NBC News’ Hallie Jackson. “I think he is doing better in Florida than people think he’s doing, but we’ll see. I don’t think he can win if he doesn’t win Florida.”

According to RealClearPolitics, Hillary Clinton leads Trump an average of 4.3 percentage points in Florida. The lead increases to 6.1 percentage points nationwide.

Rubio said he thinks there’s an acknowledgement that Trump’s “nomination is unusual and not what most people expected.”

“He did win 14 million votes, and he’s the nominee of our party, but I think a perspective of that is there is going to be leadership out of the congressional branch,” said Rubio during the interview. “As I have said many times, I don’t agree with Donald … the nominee of my party, on many issues. So I imagine that on certain issues that, if he is elected, you are going to have congressional Republicans who are going to be pushing the country potentially in a different direction than a Republican president.”

Jackson interviewed Rubio after he toured the jet drag vehicle manufacturing operation at Florida Institute of Technology Center for Advanced Manufacturing and Innovative Design.
