Greg Black has departed the fold at Gunster and struck out on his own, starting last week, he tells Florida Politics.
“I spent the last couple years in a large law firm serving my book of business, but I always had in the back of my mind the desire, the goal to have my own operation,” he said in a recent phone interview.
“To have a little more autonomy and flexibility. With an early (2020 Legislative) Session, it seemed like now is the right time to do it.”
Black joined Gunster in 2017 after advocating for a wide range of clients, from the financial services industry, to insurance, health care, biomedical research, pharmaceutical, and technology.
“I’m very, very happy and blessed that I have great clients that supported my decision,” Black added. “They are coming with me. So, in that sense, from this very first week of opening it, my firm has been a very good success so far.”
He previously represented the Florida Bankers Association where he advised financial institutions of all sizes. Black’s experience also includes procurement matters at the state and local levels.
Black graduated from the Florida State University College of Law in 2010 where he co-founded the Volunteer Student Law Project – a pro bono legal service partnership with the Legal Aid Foundation of the Tallahassee Bar Association.
Black also served as director of the law school’s alumni board, is now its president-elect, and chaired its development committee.
He has returned to the FSU campus to speak with participants in the Donald J. Weidner Summer for Undergraduates program.
Black also has served on the board for Take Stock In Children, a nonprofit providing opportunities for a postsecondary education to low-income students throughout Florida.
Now, he chairs The Florida Bar’s Governmental and Public Policy Advocacy Committee.
“I’m really looking forward to the opportunity and excited to see what the future holds, and expand on my client base,” Black said.
The 34-year-old is married with two small daughters: “Most importantly, this allows me to make sure that I prioritize my clients and my family.”
