Republican state Rep. Travis Cummings of Orange Park and Democratic colleague from Miami Shores Rep. Daphne Campbell filed paperwork this week allowing them to raise money for their 2016 re-election bids, according to the Florida Division of Elections.
Cummings is running for his third term in the Florida House. He ran unopposed by a major-party candidate, defeating Libertarian Kenneth Willey 81-19 after cruising to the GOP nomination without opposition. Cummings’ District 18 comprises most of Clay County, where Cummings has extensive experience in local government.
Campbell had a bit more excitement in her District 108 primary, defeating fellow Democrats Michael Hepburn and Taj Echoles, who recorded 19 and 17 percent of the vote, respectively. The Haitian-born Campbell won the remaining 64 percent before automatically winning the general election unopposed.
Both representatives were elected in opposite-party wave years in relatively non-competitive districts.
