Dane Eagle cleared of conflict of interest claim

State Rep. Dane Eagle was cleared this past week of a complaint filed against him by an opponent in last summer’s Republican primary.

Jim Roach submitted a complaint to the Commission on Ethics against the Cape Coral Republican over a bill he sponsored in the previous legislative session.

Roach, who lost to Eagle in a four-way primary race for House District 77 in August, alleged a conflict of interest for Eagle’s vote on a House bill having to do with the Florida Home Builders Association.

HB 593 sought to give $250,000 annually to the Future Builders of America program, funded by the Florida Home Builders Association. Money would come from construction surcharges. The bill also called for changes in building codes and permitting.

While sponsoring the bill, Eagle was on the Lee County Building Industry Association as director of development. Since then, he had resigned. The Ethics Commission found the bill did not concern Eagle’s employer.
