State Rep. Reggie Fullwood will hold an event on Saturday, February 7 wherein friendly voters will accompany their representative to the polls and cast their votes on the first day of Early Voting in a District 13 special election.
Fullwood is facing what should amount to token opposition from Republican Lawrence “Jeff” Jefferson in a deeply blue portion of central Duval County. He previously won a primary battle in convincing fashion against Democratic City Councilman Johnny Gaffney back in December.
The Jacksonville Democrat’s campaign, however certain of triumph now, was not always progressing so smoothly. The special election was called in the first place after Fullwood failed to properly complete campaign qualifying documents before a June filing deadline.
Fullwood initially alleged that the Florida Division of Elections had wrongfully excluded him from the ballot, saying he “substantially” complied with the filing requirements. He has since dropped the suit and appears well on his way to re-election, though strictly speaking he is not an incumbent, his term having expired in January.
The snafu will allow Fullwood to re-start the clock on his term-limited service, meaning that he could potentially hold office in the House eight more years atop his three already served.
Fullwood was first elected in 2010.
