At 2:30 p.m. today, the state’s Legislative Budget Committee will consider granting millions of dollars in tax breaks to four entities for sports stadiums: The Daytona International Speedway, the city of Orlando for Orlando City Soccer, the city of Jacksonville for the NFL Jaguars, and South Florida Stadium LLC, the home of the Miami Dolphins.
Americans for Prosperity (AFP), though, says if those legislators approve the distribution of the $7 million that’s on the table, there will be hell to pay from their organization.
“Any legislators who think this vote is going to pass unnoticed is mistaken,” Chris Hudson, Florida director of Americans for Prosperity, stated in a prepared statement issued Thursday morning. “AFP will make sure that taxpayers know who stood up for them and who voted for even more corporate welfare.”
The libertarian-oriented group has blasted away at subsidies for sports stadiums and proposals to lure more Hollywood productions to the Sunshine State in the weeks and months leading up to the legislative session.
As Florida Politics reporter Christine Jordan Sexton reported Wednesday, speculation is mounting that none of the applications will be approved.
“When the Legislative Budget Committee votes today on a proposal to extend even more sports incentives, we will be watching,” Hudson said. “Floridians will know which legislators are standing up for taxpayers, and which are voting to give away more of their hard-earned money.”
