Mitch Perry Report for 2.27.15 — Tampa City Council District 6 race just got a bit naughty
Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville is developing a 'mini-brain' for those suffering from Lewy body dementia (LBD).

The 2015 Tampa Mayoral/City Council campaign has been a veritable snooze fest so far, but it’s starting to heat up as we approach the final weekend before Election Day on Tuesday.

In an extremely personal attack, District 6 challenger Tommy Castellano Thursday night issued a vitriolic statement against Jackie Toledo, calling her and her campaign “an embarrassment.”

Does Castellano think he needed something desperate to make it into the run-off? Will it hurt Toledo further, who has been the recipient of horrible news coverage during the past week and a half? Or does Castellano end up alienating female voters who were thinking of voting for him?

And does this all help Guido Maniscalco?

And does this all inspire people who up until now haven’t been paying much attention to the race decide they want to actually participate in this little thing we’ve got here in America called democracy? If so, you better be in District 6, which includes only West Tampa, Seminole Heights, and parts of South Tampa.

There are seven early voting sites open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today through Sunday.

In other news …

Maybe because 2016’s a year when their people are expected to get to the polls in bigger numbers, but another Hillsborough County Democrat is contemplating a run for local office.

Nobody has been busier the past few weeks filing interesting bills leading up the beginning of the 2015 Florida Legislative Session than Jeff Brandes. Thursday Brandes filed a new bill on amending Florida civil forfeiture laws; the day before he introduced a transportation bill that would give the governor more choice over who sits on Hillsborough County’s controversial Public Transportation Commission.

And with all of this heaviness going on in the City Council race(s), how ’bout some frivolity, as in where’s your favorite place to get a Cuban sandwich in Tampa? Find out the answers and more right here.
