State legislator Charles McBurney is one of six finalists to be a 4th Judicial Circuit judge. But the NRA seeks to block that, reports Sunshine State News.

In an email sent to members, the NRA claimed McBurney scuttled a hearing on “Burden of Proof” legislation this session, in his capacity as House Judiciary Committee chair.

“As Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, Charles McBurney arrogantly put his blind ambition to become judge ahead of your constitutional right of self-defense and your basic fundamental right to the presumption of innocence,” wrote Marion Hammer.

The committee’s not hearing the bill, which passed the Senate, ensured that it didn’t get a floor vote.

Describing McBurney’s position as “political pandering,” the letter contends “McBurney traded your rights for his own personal gain,” SSN wrote.

The SSN report notes that McBurney meets with Gov.  Rick Scott regarding the judgeship on Thursday.
