‘Historic’ ban on dog racing scores easy win with Florida voters

Lone greyhound ready to race-Van Abernethy

As some hoped, others feared, and few expected, a proposed constitutional amendment aimed at ending live dog racing in Florida has won at the ballot box.

Amendment 13 got 69 percent ‘yes’ votes and 31 percent ‘no’ votes statewide as of 8:15 p.m. Tuesday. Proposed amendments need no less than 60 percent approval to be added to the state’s governing document.

As recently as this week, its passage was far from certain. A survey by St. Pete Polls showed a total of 50 percent polled were for Amendment 13, while 38 percent were opposed and nearly 12 percent were still undecided.

The Protect Dogs-Yes on 13 campaign released a statement Tuesday night, calling it a “historic vote.”

“Florida voters have delivered a knock-out blow to a cruel industry that has been hurting and killing dogs for nearly a century,” the campaign said. “Thanks to the passage of Amendment 13, thousands of innocent hounds will finally get the second chance they deserve. This is a small step in turning the page on a relic of the old economy, but a giant step for animal protection nationwide.

“We are thankful for the hard work of our volunteers, who have made many sacrifices in order to give these gentle dogs a voice. We are also grateful for the overwhelming support we have received from editorial boards, Attorney General Pam Bondi, Sen. Tom Lee, Rep. Carlos Guillermo Smith, Andrew Gillum, Lara Trump, Mike Hill, Gov. Rick Scott, Mike Huckabee, U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz, the Democratic Progressive Caucus of Florida, the Florida Federation of Republican Women, and so many others.

“We would also like to thank all of our endorsers and the four sponsors of Amendment 13: GREY2K USA Worldwide, the Humane Society of the United States, the Doris Day Animal League and Animal Wellness Action.

“In the coming days we will reach out to the greyhound industry as the adoption process begins. Greyhounds make wonderful companions, and this is an opportunity to help thousands of dogs find loving homes. While the vote is over, our work is far from done.”

Amendment 13 was placed on the ballot by the 2017-18 Constitution Revision Commission, as opposed to a citizen initiative or by the Legislature.

The language outlaws placing bets on greyhound and other dog races, such as at the state’s pari-mutuels. In Florida, live dog racing is still conducted at 11 tracks.

The amendment allows greyhound racing to continue through the end of 2020. The proposal, however, allows other gambling at tracks, such as card games, to continue even after dog racing ends.

I feel sorry for the people of Florida who voted for this amendment today, you were lied to about the nature of the sport and business of greyhound racing. As the adopter of several retired racing greyhounds my experience with these wonderful animals is not at all the abused animal crap those people masquerading as protectors Grey2K told you. I thought you would see through the bull and vote no on this amendment. Even today they still lie, The Protect Dogs Yes on 13 group just did in the above article. The lives of many greyhounds today were put in peril by your vote for this amendment today Floridians. If there is no viable market for these racers any more. Then the existing ones are going to either be sold to China to satisfy their dog meat fetish (this has happened already in Ireland) or they will be destroyed if they aren’t lucky enough to be adopted. So, all you people who screwed up and voted ‘yes’ for this amendment, I sincerely hope that you will be willing to step up and take some responsibility for your action and adopt these wonderful animals when the time comes.

You are wrong! I work for a rescue organization in Arizona and our last track closed 2 years ago. All dogs eere adopted and in good homes, none were destroyed or sold to china. I know for fact that the rescue organizations will take goid care of then, even the ones that were badly hurt or abused at the track. No dog will be destroyed!

No Doug isn’t a moron, he just thinks his experience is all there is. The truth is, he doesn’t know anything about the facts. If he did a little research, he might learn something. I was where he is several years ago because the track near me was heavily monitored and still there was abuse. The abusing trainers were banned and just moved on to other tracks. But I didn’t see the results of their actions, I saw very good dogs being adopted and living great lives. The abused dogs never showed up on the adoption list. I found out the hard way. Doug, I hope you never see the results of the abuse that goes on rather openly these days. If you love your dogs (and I’ve no reason to believe you don’t), it would literally make you sick.

As a person who runs a rescue for several years now I’ve seen many greyhounds and other “hobby” dogs in terrible condition. Animals are not for our entertainment or for us to make a quick buck. Get a new hobby.

        November 7, 2018 at 11:17 am

Right on. We use dogs, racing and draft horses , circus animals, etc. for entertainment. They are trained, pushed, forced to go faster, longer, stronger to earn or win money on their backs. They have no say in it and can’t get out of it and no, the animals don’t “just love the excitement and the competition! Have you watched race horses being beaten with a whip over and over near the finish line? And Have you seen draft horses threatened with a long whip to pull heavier and heavier stones? Just for people to yell and cheer. Forget it, out law it. Find your entertainment that doesn’t have to perform for your pleasure!

No one has a “right” to watch dogs be mistreated, injured and killed for profit. Nowhere in the Bible does God say go thou forth and race dogs. In the Constitution the Founding Fathers (some of whom owed greyhounds) were similarly silent on the matter of exploiting them for money.

Everthing is connected on this earth. One thing is not separate from the other! Man has depended on animals for survival since the beginning! Man takes care his of animals and the animals take care of man. People love and have a passion for their animals and the animals for their man, it’s a simpatico relationship. There are obviously bad men in every area of life, especially politics, and after reading some of these comments, right here! Talking of violence and harming your fellow man, really!

what do people who work do with there dogs when they go to work a lot of them put them in a cage for the day and do you know how many people who own horses leave them in a 10 x 10 stall 24 x 7 and say they love them so much . we own horses and they get the best food and care possible , why don’t you try to help all of the poor kids who are starving or getting missed treated , be a foster parent which my parents were when I was younger. how many of you watch professional sports football , hockey , basketball and so on , these players are given drugs to cover up pain so they can play or to make them stronger and it’s all for the owners greed but you still watch them, you people need to help the children and the poor in this world before you worry about racing my god where’s your priorities

Humans have choices to take a drug, play a sport, bet on horses, bet on dogs, have unprotected sex, stay with abusers, overeat, and not study at school so as to be able to correctly punctuate and spell.

These dogs had no choice in how they were bred, fed, exercised, lived and died.

And any work with non profits or donations of time, adopting kids, fostering kids, fostering animals, blah, blah, blah…..or anything else has zero bearing on these greyhounds and the lowlife racing Industry. Many of us can multitask.

I’m not in Florida but when I read this I immediately thought of what happens to the dogs. Had no idea there were 11 tracks. That’s a lot of homes needed. Hopefully the rescues there aren’t like the one out of MA that makes the adoption process so taxing that people eventually want to give up.

First of all, it’s done. Get used to it. You arguments are fantasies and foolishness. I knew this would pass and the reasons against it were weak. It was meant to be. The animals win. So, to you they are only racers? What about all the Vick dogs that a judge allowed to live? Were they only fighters? Well, history showed they lived good lives. They are almost died out now. The China argument is nuts. They have no meat on them and China has plenty of their own meat supply. These dogs have owners, do they not? Like race horses have owners? It’s really going to be their call on what they do. It’s not like Jan1 2020 comes and the 11 tracks open the gates, give them a stick and a handkerchief and send them on their way.

      • Melissa Murphey Maedgen

        November 7, 2018 at 3:26 pm

Exactly. If these racer owners who have been making money off the dogs cared about them so much, they would provide safe, forever homes for their cast-off dogs. Have they done that? No. Instead they rely on charities, and animal rescue dollars to provide those homes. Same thing goes for horse racing. The sad thing is that rescue donations go to take in these animals and subsidize the racing business, because the people breeding the animals do not have to take responsibility for them once they stop earning them money.

Doug, if you’ve had the experience of compassionate race track and racing Greyhound owners, you are indeed the exception to the rule. Most of us involved with Greyhound Rescue are sickened by the lack of care given to a racing Greyhound. They eat D grade meat, are confined in cages so small that it wears the fur off their rumps from turning around in their stacked cages, they are injected with steroids to bulk them up or to keep the females from ovulating, they are kept under weight and underfed so they will run faster, and on and on.
They are a commodity to the owner, not a pet, and there is no love involved. Greyhounds admittedly do love to run, but running isn’t the thing they need the most. They are such sweet and gentle animals, and if, as you say, you are an adopter, you know how much they crave affection. They don’t get that at a racetrack. I agree with you that the voters need to step up and open their homes to the beautiful animals, but all of the Greyhound rescue groups all over the United States are probably preparing to accept as many as they can when the time comes. We do that. Over the years my husband and I have adopted 7 hounds. We recently lost one, but we still have one who is 10 years old now. These are magnificent dogs, aren’t they!

    • Theresa kemp

      November 8, 2018 at 7:57 am

So your answer is to keep breeding? Of course there will be suffering, but this industry is the cause. By stopping it, the big picture promises no more suffering for these beautiful animals. I have worked intensely in rescue in Ireland. I also adopt greyhounds and lurchers.

Here’s the deal, these beautiful dogs are routinely destroyed when their usefulness runs out; so, I struggle to see your point. Furthermore, Florida tracks are NOT the first tracks to be closed; again, I struggle to see your point. These Greyhounds are kept in crates, they’re treated like objects and their purpose is to line the pockets of their trainers and owners. If the sport ends in Florida, as it has in many other states FYI…the Greyhound rescues will mobilize and descend on those tracks to take the Greys if they are no longer wanted. That’s what they do. Greyhounds of America is one of the biggest rescues and they’re nationwide. Again, your point is moot. There is plenty of cruelty going on in this sport. My parents have been adopting retired racers for well over 25-years. We have seen the photos of the piles of dead Greyhounds with their ears cut off. You can’t claim photoshop on those…they’re very real and the people who destroy them are vile and pathetic excuses for human beings. I’m glad Florida voted to end this practice. Many states have, Florida is just catching up to the times. That’s all I have to say to you, Doug. Have a nice day.

People actually threatened to kill their Greys if they lost the vote? Well, what does that tell you about the people who run the sport? Psychopaths, pure and simple. If they threaten this and you know who is making the threats, report them to the Florida ASPCA who have the power to arrest and prosecute cases of animal cruelty and neglect. Yes, they do prosecute and people do sit in jail for what they do to their pets. It’s the right thing to do. Report em!

What is the difference between dog racing and horse racing? Yes, a serious question.

    • Neil

      November 7, 2018 at 3:14 am

The difference is the amount of money and the length of the tradition. From what I’ve read, hundreds of race horses die every year, and THOUSANDS of horses are sent to slaughter. This includes thoroughbreds who just don’t make the grade. Horse racing is a ghastly sport, but the history of it is so long people don’t care.

It’s actually believed that there are about 5000 dogs total in FL in the racing industry. 8000 has been mentioned a lot but apparently that’s an exaggeration. Rescues and shelters have known this could be coming and have 2 years to work on the issue. They will still need public support in the form of donations (as they always do) to help get the dogs placed safely. But all these dire stories are basically scare tactics.

Gina, Google ‘Greyhounds As Pets’ and ‘Greyhounds of America’. They can get you in touch with local foster homes that have Greys available for adoption. They’re the sweetest dogs in the world, truly they are. It was hard to look at their skinny, balloon muscled bodies, but once you get to know a Grey…all that melts away and they rule your heart! We currently have a Greyhound named Angel. OH! She is SUCH a joy in our home and the girl is spoiled beyond measure. She has her own wardrobe haha loves to wear dresses and she loves to prance around the Veterinarian’s office and say hello to everyone in her dresses. They love her, too. She’s regal, beautiful, distinguished, loves squeaker toys and peanut butter flavored treats and chews. Greyhounds traditional wear Martingale Collars and there are a few excellent crafters on Etsy who make them! Wider collars are more comfortable. They need a lot of exercise, so if you have a big backyard, that’s definitely ideal! I wish you the very best as you start your journey toward adopting Greyhounds. Angel is my family’s 9th Greyhound in 25-years. Our oldest lived to be 17-years old!

The most irresponsible and inhumane amendment was passed in FL. This unleashes 8,000+ greyhounds (tracks, farms, other states) who can be displaced at any time since tracks can close as early as 1/1/2019 and a track closing schedule does not exist. Due to our greyhound adoption network, greyhounds come to us and stay out of shelters. There are NO money provisions in this amendment to help transition to adoption (vetting, shelter, hauling, etc).

For the LOVE OF GOD, do NOT send donations to animal shelters, Grey2K, Humane Society of US, PETA, etc bec/ your money will probably pay salaries instead of helping the greyhounds.

SEND MONEY TO GREYHOUND ADOPTION GROUPS. See the list of the 102 groups that opposed this hideous amendment . Use this link for the NGA endorsed group as partners in responsible adoption.

All this means is that the tracks will begin to convert themselves into “casino style” gambling facilities, which is much worse for the local community because of the gambling addiction and drug & alcoholism problems that it will carry with it. Plus you can still go bet on simulcast horse racing from all over the country, which is in reality a much crueler industry for the animals. Thankfully horse racing will never be banned, due to the huge amount of money that it generates. Anyone that voted yes on amendment 13, obviously lacks an education or any common sense.

    • What?

      November 7, 2018 at 11:31 am

What? So keep the abusive dog racing to help those gamblers and addicts that gamble and do drugs? Hahaha……maybe shut down all of it. Theres your answer. Plus of course the shady side of gambling, the lack of declaring your winnings, not paying taxes on them, …etc, etc, etc.

  • Usual Suspects

    November 7, 2018 at 10:05 am

Legislation always makes strange bedfellows. This was a casino expansion bill. It was fundamentally never about the dogs, really, but the concept of animal welfare is what helped to pass it.

There is no pari-mutuel permitholder in Florida that willingly wants to operate any type of pari-mutuel activity any longer. Even those like Gulfstream that claim they do. The only question now is how the dog racing ban will play out against the also-successful Amendment 3.

Eliminating horse racing–or at least decoupling it–will now be a whole lot easier.

What voters forget: The public companies that now control gambling in Florida are not “Mom and Pop” businesses that need deregulation. Gambling exists here to keep our taxes low. Not to enrich mammoth corporations.

Why not start by regulating and taxing ADWs? There’s where the missing money is!

I don’t need pennies, which is what is thrown at your dancers in your sleazy strip joint, still have another year for racing in Florida, and there are still other tracks, I began a study of harness racing last November just in case this happened, and am turning a profit, not as good as dogs yet, but that will come with time.

You are one of the dumbest gurus Ive ever debated with, Nobody tosses pennies only $50s & $100s. The ban on dogs here will cripple the last survivors in live racing in other states. The fact that you study harness racing proves your a dope. Thats totally fixed. Just like dog racing and jai alai and football and basketball and baseball. Your easiest life changing bet was to listen to me. You could have been rich by banking on both amendments 3 & 13 passing. Maybe you should take up sucking golfballs thru a garden hose at least you would have a bonafide talent.

So if dog racing is fixed sure is funny I’ve done so well at it over the years, actually the remaining tracks will have a higher handle because of the the demise of racing in Florida, you can google ” demise” to see what it means considering you still don’t know the difference between ” your ” and ” you’re”. If I ‘ listened to you”, I would be adept at proving my ignorance as you are so talented at. Still you don’t tell us what date the legislature put 3 on the ballot, of course you never mention that because they didn’t put it on the ballot exactly like I how to teach you, it was a citizen’s petition drive, but of course low intellect sleazy gutter dwellers like you wouldn’t know that.

Yes, most strip clubs have 50s and 100s tossed around, but yours is no doubt one of the nastiest around, full of crack and meth, nothing but the ugliest skanks, so pennies it is there, uneducated lout.

They are having a sale on garden hoses at walmart. By the way what is the name of my club? Your statements are from one who obviously has no clue in this world. I will on record give you 10k if you can tell me which club is mine. You have only 1 guess. Just imagine winning 10,000 times your yearly gambling earnings on one little bet.

. Go for it mr guru.

Anyone that thinks racing dogs is the right thing are the idiots. It’s about their egos. They’re not damn athletes. What, because you don’t kick them when they’re laying down makes it right? WRONG. Animals, any animal, used for entertainment is wrong. It’s that simple. You can try to justify it all you like. No seal was suppose to be balancing itself on a ball. No elephant was suppose to be standing on it’s hind legs on command and damn, no dog is to be forced around a track for money! None of that is natural for the animal and sorry, just because you make them do it and they can doesn’t mean that’s their calling!

Of course adjustments now need to be made. It won’t be perfect. But the best thing to do was to end this first. There is nothing right or natural about this and it’s just a bunch of greedy humans trying to defend the indefensible!

Need to stop horse racing as well! All for the same reasons. Humans and their over blown egos!

Goggle greyhound rescues to find one close to you. Greys make GREYT pets. National Greyhound Adoption Program (NGAP) in Philadelphia, PA has a website with lots of information. You won’t regret adopting one of these magnificent dogs.

Click on this link to find vetted responsible greyhound adoption groups that are endorsed by the National Greyhound Association (NGA). This is the best place to start.

Google ‘Greyhounds As Pets’ or ‘Greyhounds of America’. Both are great rescues and are nationally renown in the Greyhound Rescue Community. They can help set you on the right path toward adoption! Best of luck to you! You’ll love having Greys! As the saying goes, Greyhounds are like potato chips. You can’t have just one!

Sounds like the money-hungry Humane Society of the United States, which runs 2 of the other bill sponsors, will try to raise money and improve its image by offering adoption assistance. Except that HSUS has never adopted out a dog in its 60+ year existence and has no relation at all to pet shelters. Kitty Block is still the interim CEO because no ethical person wants the job. Block is a lifer who will continue to maintain the status quo.

I hope the industry decides to put the welfare of the dogs first for once and work with adoption groups—all adoption groups to ensure a safe and orderly transition of dogs from the tracks.
