Early voting in NE Florida special elections has begun

The long tail of John Thrasher‘s decision to leave the state Senate to assume the presidency of Florida State University will come to an end on April 7, when special elections to fill the legislative vacancies left in his wake are held.

Early voting in three statehouse special elections began this weekend and ends Saturday, before elections take place the next Tuesday.

Voters will take to the polls in Senate District 6, Thrasher’s former seat, as well as House Districts 17 and 24, whose representatives left their respective seats to pursue Thrasher’s.

District 24 Rep. Travis Hutson topped Rep. Ronald “Doc” Renuart in February in a contentious Republican primary match-up for the privilege of walloping the Democrats’ sacrificial lamb, David Cox of Daytona Beach.

Paul Renner is the frontrunner to assume Hutson’s seat based in Flagler, St. Johns and Volusia counties, facing off against Democrat Adam Morley in a Republican-oriented district. Republican Cyndi Stevenson faces minor NPA and write-in opposition in her bid to take over Renuart’s district in the House that includes part of St. Johns County.
