Anticipating a special election, three St. Johns County Republicans filed for campaign accounts to succeed state Rep. Ronald “Doc” Renuart in House District 17, according to the Florida Division of Elections.
Although he easily won another term on Tuesday, Renuart intends to run in a special election for a Republican state Sen. John Thrasher’s seat.
The State University System Board of Governors expects to confirm Thrasher as the new Florida State University president this week.
Renuart’s Senate campaign could set off another special election to fill his Northeast Florida House District 17 seat.
Republicans Cyndi Stevenson and John Capra each opened campaign accounts this week to run for the House, as did Republican Michael Davis last month. The accounts were for the 2016 election, but they could be shifted to a special election.
Elkton Republican Rep. Travis Hutson is also possibly considering a run for Thrasher’s Senate seat. Hutson is the only candidate in House District 24 with an open campaign account.
