Just in case the Tampa Bay Times‘ Adam Smith has not written his column picking the Winner and Loser of the Week in Florida politics, there is a clear-cut winner…
U.S. Rep. Patrick Murphy.
Sure, Murphy has taken some flak this past week from his left flank, but other than that, he couldn’t ask for a better seven days.
Not only did Murphy win the endorsements of mayors Bob Buckhorn of Tampa and Andrew Gillum of Tallahassee, but his strongest likely opponent, Republican Jeff Atwater, announced on Saturday he would not run for the U.S. Senate in 2016.
With Will Weatherford more likely to run in 2018 than next year, Murphy now just has to maneuver past U.S. Rep. Alan Grayson on his left and U.S. Ron DeSantis and Lt. Gov. Carlos Lopez-Cantera on his right.
Let’s be honest, running against those guys will be a walk in the park compared with Murphy’s first race against Allen West in 2012.
If one has some money in the political futures market PredictIt, today might be a good day to buy a few options on the Democrats winning Florida’s U.S. Senate seat in 2016.
