Florida Democratic Party creates new website blasting Ron DeSantis

Internet Tax

That didn’t take long.

Shortly after Florida Republican U.S. Rep. Ron DeSantis announced he is an official candidate for the U.S. Senate seat in 2016, the Florida Democratic Party responded immediately with a website, RonDeSantis2016.com, that features a large picture of the 36-year-old Representative with the words, “Ron DeSantis: For the Tea Party.”

“The last Tea Party congressman to run for U.S. Senate in Florida suffered a resounding defeat because of just how out of touch he was with the values of Florida’s middle class,” FDP spokesman Max Steele said. “If anything, Congressman Ron DeSantis would be an even bigger disaster for Florida’s families than Connie Mack. He’s a risk Floridians can’t afford, and we will make sure voters know it. This website is just beginning of our campaign against Congressman DeSantis’ Tea Party record.”

The site hits DeSantis with a litany of contentions:

  • DeSantis has a long record of supporting anti-Hispanic and anti-immigrant legislation.
  • DeSantis wants to end Medicare as we know it.
  • DeSantis disagrees with the majority of Floridians who believe love is love and support marriage equality for all.
  • DeSantis is a strong and vocal opponent of a woman’s right to choose, opposes equal pay for equal work for women, and even voted against reauthorizing the Violence Against Women Act.
The site is also asking for financial contributions to the Democratic Party.
DeSantis announced his candidacy Wednesday morning, becoming the first Republican to enter the contest after a number of higher profile members of the party, including CFO Jeff Atwater, former House Speaker Will Weatherford, and U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan declined a run at the seat as Marco Rubio runs for president.
U.S. Rep. Patrick Murphy of Jupiter, the only Democrat to declare his candidacy for the seat, said Wednesday morning, “Floridians want fresh, new leadership in the U.S. Senate. I am running to end the gridlock in Congress, strengthen Social Security and Medicare, and empower the middle class to succeed. I look forward to sharing my vision with Floridians across the state over the course of this campaign.”
