With a recent poll showing GOP momentum with less than two weeks to go until the May 19 election, Republican candidates Mike Williams and Lenny Curry issued responses to the latest St. Pete Poll, which showed Curry up by 4 points over Mayor Alvin Brown and Williams in a virtual tie with Ken Jefferson in the sheriff’s race.
Williams, in a release, said he was “delighted” by the results, which show a “doubling of his support” from the 22 percent showing in the first election, to the 46 percent showing in this week’s poll.
“We are excited about the poll. Since the election on March 24, we have closed the gap. Clearly our message is getting out, and voters recognize that my focus on character, competence, and accountability is working. Most importantly, my ethical conduct during my career is validated by the results,” Williams asserted in a written statement.
Meanwhile, the Curry side, via spokesman Brian Hughes, had this to say:
“Lenny Curry has been the underdog since he announced to run. Lenny is working hard to overcome a barrage of attacks launched by Alvin Brown, including divisive ads that have been described as race-baiting by African-American leaders. Lenny has presented an alternative to Brown’s mudslinging that people are responding to: a detailed plan and an optimistic vision for Jacksonville’s future. We will not stop working for every vote until the last ballot is cast on May 19th,” Hughes asserted, also in a written statement.
Florida Politics has yet to get response to the poll from Alvin Brown or Ken Jefferson.
