In a five-minute videotaped message from Washington, Marco Rubio began Rick Scott’s Economic Growth Summit with a quick summation of some of his ideas to turn around the American economy if he’s elected president next year.
Beginning with his familiar tale of how his Cuban immigrant parents, saying that since he officially kicked off his campaign he’s met many people who remind them of his mother and father: “My parents never got rich, but they were successful, because in just a few years they achieved a happy life. They achieved what’s become known as the American Dream.”
Rubio then segued into how elected officials haven’t kept pace with the dizzying levels of transformation happening with the American economy, saying that although the economy has been transformed, our policies and leaders haven’t been.
He then threw in a lot of large numbers, saying that since 2008, federal regulations have cost the U.S. economy $740 billion. “We have more businesses dying than starting,” he said.
Rubio says he’ll “revolutionize” higher education, “so that all of our people can acquire the skills that they need to fill these new 21th century jobs.” He said he’d allow employers to “expense the money they invest in their businesses,” so that the more people they hire, or the more raises they give, the less they’ll pay in taxes.”
Rubio threw in another plug for The New American Century, a central tagline of his candidacy.
