A lot of the discussion regarding the Jacksonville Police and Fire Pension Deal that was approved by the Pension Board by a 4-1 margin on Friday revolved, justifiably, around the yeoman’s work that Mayor Alvin Brown, his Chief of Staff Chris Hand, and the rest of the team did toward getting the basic framework in place. However, the man who will be charged with following through on that deal is incoming Mayor Lenny Curry, who had some observations of his own.
In a phone conversation on Friday, Mayor Elect Curry called the deal a “tremendous step toward certainty and financial stability,” and specifically credited Councilman Bill Gulliford for his unstinting efforts toward pushing the deal through to completion. However, there is still work to do.
Curry described himself as “committed to solving the unfunded liability” in a way that “allows for the highest level of service” for Jacksonville taxpayers.
“I will lead the effort with my team to come up with a solution,” he said.
Of course, we already know one member of that team, Chief Administrative Officer Sam Mousa. Though rumors are swirling about other appointments in the #jaxpol scene, nothing is set in stone yet.
“I’m evaluating a whole host of folks,” Curry said. “I’m a deliberative person; I think through things.”
