Jacksonville’s Andrew Jackson statue vandalized twice

A statue of Andrew Jackson in downtown Jacksonville has been vandalized twice in the past week.

The Florida Times-Union reports that graffiti was sprayed on the statue of the seventh president over the weekend. Jackson was also Florida’s military governor in 1821 after the territory was acquired from Spain. Large orange letters spelled out “Black Lives Matter” and “justice 4 D” on the statue’s base.

The paper says the latter could refer to the May fatal shooting of D’anglo Stallworth by Jacksonville police.

Earlier last week, someone put a mask of a Native American on the statue. As president, Jackson signed the Indian Removal Act of 1830 that led to thousands being forced from their native land to reservations west of the Mississippi River.

Andrew Jackson was a genocidal asshole who exceeded his authority by invading and claiming Florida for the purpose of preventing Florida from being a refuge for runaway slaves and Native Americans.
